Collaboration with Horus Aged Ales

This collab with Horus is a hulked-out and incredibly delectable imperial stout, brewed with a variety of oats and lavished with bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It’s a thunderous flavor detonation that manages to evoke both dessert and breakfast in all of the best ways possible.

16oz can poured into a snifter

A- pours black in color with a one0finger foamy khaki head that has decent retention

S- plenty of oaky barrel juice on the nose, with an enhanced vanilla bean note. Dark chocolate, fudge, caramel, brown sugar and an undertone of maple and cinnamon

T- sweet and malty with a blast of sweet maple, chocolate fudge, brown sugar and caramel. Mid-palate brings out some oaky bourbon notes, along with a strong vanilla bean note. The finish gives an undertones of cinnamon, along with more bourbon and pastry-like chocolate

M- medium-heavy body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns creamy and silky into a slightly warming finish

Glass: Pure Project 16-oz. brandy snifter glass
Price: $13.00
From: Modern Times Lomaland in Point Loma (San Diego), Calif.
Purchased: Oct. 24, 2020; Picked up Oct. 29, 2020
Consumed: Nov. 12, 2020
Misc.: Couldn’t read the canned on date

Ordered this along with an IPA 4-pack, then added on some more on Oct. 29 when I picked it up. This was a collab with Horus Aged Ales. Email description read, “This collab with Horus is a hulked-out and incredibly delectable imperial stout, brewed with a variety of oats and lavished with bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup, brown sugar, and cinnamon. It’s a thunderous flavor detonation that manages to evoke both dessert and breakfast in all of the best ways possible.” Sounded delicious.

Poured a pitch black color with two fingers of khaki-tan frothy head, which dissipated immediately. Just a few bubbles creeping up toward the top of the glass. Decent watery lacing. Decent retention. (Sight - 3.50)

Smelled caramel, cinnamon, brown sugar, maple syrup, vanilla, cream, latte and caramel candy squares. Not as good out of the can. (Smell - 4.25)

Tasted almost as good as the nose, but not quite. Very smooth for 13 pct. ABV. Got caramel, sticky maple syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, cream, latte, caramel candy squares, toffee and hints of dark fruit. (Taste - 4.00)

Full body. Sticky texture. Average carbonation. Long, smooth, warming finish. (Feel - 4.50)

Was back and forth on a few categories, including the overall. Maybe feeling generous, but going with a 4.25 (excellent). (Overall - 4.25)

Dark brown with a finger of tan-colored head. Modest retention. Very little lacing.

Roasted malt, light maple and pecan in the nose.

Strong brown sugar sweetness in the taste, as well as maple, more light pecan nutttiness, cinnamon, coffee and chocolate chip pancakes.

Medium bodied, somewhat sticky feeling, with fairly strong, tight carbonation.

Pancake breakfast in a glass. Super sweet, but delicious.

Blind review: The beer pours a deep brown with almost no head and no lacing.

The smell is sweet, boozy, chocolate, malty, caramel, coffee, and something fruity.

The taste is very sweet, burnt caramel, marshmallow with a milk chocolate finish. Not getting any barrel presence.

Mouthfeel is low carbonation, very slick, smooth, and thick body.

Overall, this is really good, sweet, and an excellent dessert beer. I'm thinking non-BA imperial stout with several sweet additions.

L: Dark chocolate with a hint of tan color on the lace.

S: Wonderful scents of sweet chocolate desserts fill the area with the pour. The aroma reminds me as a kid walking into a candy store. Scents of chocolate, licorice, brownies and cinnamon.

T: At first taste, an initial thick engulfing molasses calmness, then a refreshing subtle hint of chocolate and bourbon sweetness that amplifies as it transverses your tongue. As you swallow, an explosion of a chocolate, bourbon, and maple goodness as the carbonation fizzes. Lastly it fades into a very slightly bitter complex chocolate flavor. It’s almost like a magical transition from milk chocolate to pure 99.7% cocoa dark chocolate happening on your tastebuds.

F: Med bodied

O: Not your regular boring stout! From the pour to the finish, beautifully executed! Brilliant - a must try! Good choose if you are ‘stouted-out’ or want to introduce someone new to stouts.
