This Amber Lager leaps through fields of toasty, amber malts and grazes on ample cascade and crystal hops for a malt-forward, bready profile with just a hint of refreshing hop bitterness and a clean finish.

(shaker pint, at the brewery)
This is basically a lighter Oktoberfest; drier, lighter, and spicier... I dare say I'd buy this regularly if they had it pounder cans in my market... Don't think Yuengling. This could be considered a refined version of it... Bread crust, doughy bread, toasted malt, spicy edge... Not sure what people were expecting with this. Why the tepid ratings? This is good. (2166)

Do my eyes deceive me? No, they don't.
Rhinegeist calls this an "amber lager," but somebody forgot to make it amber. Describing the color as gold would be a stretch.
Even stranger is that the aroma and flavor do have substantial crystal malt characteristics.
How do you make a beer that smells and tastes like an amber lager without the color? Apparently it can be done.

Loosely modeled after Vienna Lager but with an ale-like twist, this marriage between red ale and amber lager shows a crisper and edgier taste on a smoother classic beer.
Bright and bubbly, Antelope carries an ivory froth across a light amber body before gently releasing a nutty, toasty and lightly caramelized scent. A mild floral hop character leads into an early taste of caramel, honey and bread crust in an easy going malt sweetness going forward.
As those plump malts wash the middle palate with its mild mannered sweetness, the beer develops a more nutty and toasty flavor as the sweetness dissolves and the hops move in. Trending balanced with peppery and citrusy hops, the late taste is drying, succinct while sharing a bitter-sweet, even keel balance.
Not as smooth as most lager and sharper like ale, the beer's more mineral profile allows for a snappy, crisp and sharper edge when finishing, and getting away from the smoothness of most amber lager. Its a simple yet characterful beer that's sure to fit right at home with any amber or red beer lover.

This is a great example of being just okay with a slight upside. Is this Franz in a new can though?... idk. Rhinegeist is quickly becoming my least favorite mainstream brewery in all of Ohio.

I am trying this beer off the tapper at The Daily Growler in Powell, Ohio. It poured a clear amber with no head and no lace. The scent had grain notes. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink with crisp malt base and grain hop finish. The mouthfeel was lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it is a good beer.
