this one was pretty rough, a belgian ipa, kind of an amber color to it, and pretty malty for what it is, but thats not my issue, the issue is with the yeast, this seems stressed, past estery and well into the phenolic range, this is soapy and chemical, molten plastic and floor polish notes from the ferment, really poorly pitched and controlled it seems, or like the wort wasnt properly chilled, maybe a glycol issue on the fermenter, but no way this is intentional, its run away, and frankly there are probably a number of quality and process issues with this. the nose is better than the taste, i smell some citrusy hops that ordinarily would be real compatible with a belgian yeast profile, orange and lemon zest meet notes of licorice and allspice and coriander, but this yeast goes way past that and so there is a clash. some light malt sweetness in the nose too is not out of place, slightly toasted, a toffee wrinkle, still a slight chemical property. the hops in the taste are green and vegetal and dont bring the citrus over from the aroma very completely. varnish and nail polish remover, overripe banana, brown sugar, and weird spiciness all mix strangely with the hops, which hit more woodsy and pine notes now, this whole thing is just sloppy and disjointed. i have not had a ton of beers from these guys, keep wanting to try more, but this really is a turnoff, on the edge of irredeemable...
