Dark brown while pouring; black in the glass with only a hint of red-brown at the edges of the glass. Poured a medium height tan colored head that collapsed to a patchy skiff in a minute. Too dark to see the carbonation level. Small lines and dots of lace, but it mostly slid down the glass.
Slightly sweet, medium roasted malt smells. Light green vegetable smell, maybe celery but not very distinct. Faint yeast smell. Swirling the glass kicked up a very faint barnyard for a couple of seconds, and then back to the original scent.
Medium-mild bitters along with a chocolate malt. Slightly sweet. Very clean. The aftertaste is mostly the same flavors, with a new flavor somewhere between unbleached dry cardboard and dry Cheerios.
Light tongue tingling. Grew to a light foam that was a bit oily or gummy.
More like an English bitter than a German dunkel. Nice clean flavor. The chocolate is very distinct. If it had some hot chili peppers added, this might be close to the original chocolate drink. Might be a thought for an experimental brew some time.

Poured from a can at fridge temp. Pours dark brown with a good amount of tan head. Lots of lacing. The nose is dark chocolate, malts, licorice, figs, roasted malts, and a bit of toffee. The taste follows the nose. Mellow, black licorice, leather, dark bread, wood, nuts. Really nice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Overall, a really nice beer.

Nice that the bitterness was a little more restrained than many of their other brews. While dark in colour, the flavour is subtle. There seemed to be a light spiciness that put me in mind of a dunkleweisse though.

The beer comes in dark brown.
There is roasty malt quality, nutty on the aroma.
The flavor hits a bit more roasty than something like a Schwarzbier, a medium minus roast, bready chewiness, without being overly dominated by roast and a crisp finish. A wonderfully clean lager finish with tons of a flavor.

Colour is unique (to me), not completely opaque and quite reddish. Not very carbonated, but pretty head. I can't catch much aroma. Tastes delicious, malty and a bit yeasty, oaty, but simple rather than complex. Best part is the finish. Not 33A's most sophisticated beer but perhaps my favourite.
