Medium-dark brown body, clear; scant, slow-rising carbonation; nice persistent head; patchy globs of off-white foam stick to the glass. Huge aroma of grain, squash, brown sugar, fall spices. Fantastic flavors of toasted grains and roasted nuts; cardamon, cinnamon, and ginger; very light overall sweetness; cocoa powder; fine whiskey undercurrent. Heavy body; velvety smooth; nice overall warmth; some boozy heat and dryness.
What an amazing beer! I assumed, since the bottle was corked and caged, that this would be some sort of saison / farmhouse ale. Instead, it's a barrel aged version of their harvest ale. The base beer was brewed September 24th, 2020 with four whole pumpkins and 300 pounds of squash, per the brewery's Facebook pages, and they filled four unnamed whiskey barrels with the base beer October 15th for the BA version, bottled it on December 10th, 2020 and released on December 19th, 2020. This is a wonderful brown ale, rich and complex. I like the relatively short barrel aging. It gives the base beer plenty of room to speak for itself while adding just the right subtlety of barrel aging flavor to keep things balanced. If I only knew earlier about this beer, I would surely have grabbed several more bottles.
