473 ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase fro about $3.25 CDN. Canned April 17, 2019. Listed at 4.7% ABV.

Appearance - Dark golden color. A bit hazy. Two fingers of dense off-white head. Loads of streaky lacing.

Smell - Pretty subdued. A bit of mango and passionfruit alongside the grapefruit.

Taste - Very subdued. Hop water essentially with a suggestion of citrus fruit. Not much malt backbone either initially although shows up in spades as you get into the beer. No aftertaste. Intensity of flavor improves marginally after the first few sips.

Mouthfeel - Medium-light bodied, higher than average carbonation, average finish.

Overall - There's nothing inherently wrong with Too Wound Down, it's just a fairly bland IPA / APA that lacks the intensity that some other local "session" IPA's have. Maybe worth a try if you really enjoy the bready mango flavor. Did improve considerably the farther I got into the beer.

Tallboy can from the LCBO; dated Mar 6 2019. Listed at 4.7% and served barely chilled.

Pours a clear, brassy golden hue, producing nearly an inch of smooth, soapy, shimmering white head. It seeps off at a gradual pace; by the time the five minute mark is reached, it has been reduced to a creamy cap and collar of foam, paired with a lovely band of delicate lace. Looks great, but the nose is another matter entirely - it's low-key, and rather odd, with kind of a 'wet dog' scent to the overall bouquet. Other than that, there are hints of stone fruit, mango, fig, melon, and gritty, grainy pale malts. Again, it's not as if it's a bad aroma or anything - there's just something weird about it.

Its flavours are quite distinct - possibly due to the usage of Azacca and Rakau (along with Citra) hops - the first two being relatively uncommon picks amongst Ontario brewers, at least in my experience. The grainy, lightly caramelized malt backbone is sturdier than in most session IPAs, providing a nice counterpoint for the subtly fruity hops to play off of. Hints of melon, apricot, mango and pineapple combine with citrusy notes of orange and grapefruit, leading into a muddled finish of stone and tropical fruitiness that doesn't linger for long. Light-ish body with moderately soft carbonation levels; feels smooth on the tongue, with superb drinkability.

Final Grade: 3.79, a B+. Bell City's Too Wound Down is a unique beer in this market - I can't think of any other session IPAs that taste much like this one - so I'm inclined to hand out a few bonus points for not simply being more of the same. Something that I could drink a few cans of in a row - its fruity, balanced flavour profile is appealing to me, and it also slides down the gullet just effortlessly. I don't know if this is the best Bell City beer I've tried so far, but it's one I could see myself returning to.
