The gnomes of Fairyland are particularly fond of this golden beer. LA CHOUFFE, with its slight hoppy taste, combining notes of fresh coriander and fruity tones, is the drink which gives them their zest for life. At least, that's what these imps say when they are thirsty. Their secret used to be jealously guarded from one generation to the next until the day they shared the recipe with humans to seal their friendship. Of all the legends from the wonderful region of the Belgian Ardennes, the tale of LA CHOUFFE is the one which most merits re-telling.

Enjoying this one on draught in a snifter.
An opaque light amber color with a thin head.
The toasted wheat malt sweetness is well complimented with the verity of yeast selected. The fruity ester flavors of banana, apple and pear meld well with the citrusy, peppery spice and hops selection. The hops are nicely balanced considering the strength of the other aspects, all adding to the experience.
A well crafted Belgian Strong Ale with a warming ABV that’s perfect.

Amsterdam 12/12 2015. 75 cl bottle from local supermarket. Fat little Christmas Elf looking for Rudolph the Reindeers footprints on the label
Pours slightly hazy yellow with a very big head. Stable. Settles as 1 cm thick layer of foam. Substantial lacing.
Aroma is sweet with some spice - black pepper freshly grinded - and caramel. Whiff of musty, Belgian cellar.
Medium strong carbonation and slightly thick palate. Lightly tingling texture.
Flavor follows the nose - more or less. Not as sweet as it smells and with a sharp spicy edge. Notes of alcohol.
A fine Belgian from La Chouffe.

My girlfriend said that It looked like dehydrated piss, I couldn't help but agree.
Starts off nice with some notes of fruit and ends with some flavors reminiscent of a wonderful whole grain loaf of bread.

Poured into Chouffe tulip glass (picked up with variety 4 pack gift set): color is gold, not clear, head is off white with frothy head with fine to medium bubbles and presents two fingers thick and leaves plenty of lacing on the glass sides.
Smell is malt, pear, light lemon, pepper, earth, phenols, Belgian yeastiness - great aroma.
Taste is similar with malt, pear, pepper, earth, phenols, light lemon, Belgian yeasty character, touch of booziness.
Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness with lingering peppery character.
Overall an awesome Belgian pale ale with prominent malt flavor, yeast, pepper, phenols and light lemon round out the flavor.

I like how the banana flavor is present, but not too strong.

Very nice. Mostly fruity. Lots of citrus- lemon, sweet orange, bit of lime. Apple and sweet fig. Baguette and rye bread. Light spice, coriander, and citrus zest, mostly on the finish. Pleasant, refreshing, well-balanced. Better than Duvel Strong Blonde.

I have enjoyed the Chouffe series of brews and found it surprising when I hadn't had this one...
Nice dark yellow coloration with thick, frothy white head. The smell is lightly malty and sweet to the nose which doesn't necessarily translate to the tongue. What does translate to the tongue is the boozy nature of the beer - truly saving it from being somewhat of an also-ran. Overall, I graded it good because it is balanced and it was truly a enjoy to drink.
