You'd naturally expect something called SunRay Saison to be golden and radiant but this thing is ghastly pale - we're talking near colourless. Picture Champagne and you're in the right ballpark. Held against the light it's almost white. Were it not for the lively bubbles and strong head I'd be concerned for its health.
The aroma is equally as faded as the appearance; the orchard fruits, farmhouse grain, and spicy phenols that define the style are all so dim as to be almost undetectable. There's also a yeasty bi-product that surely was unintended; the best way I can describe it is like smoky bubblegum.
Some Saison are so chockablock with ripe (or rotting) pear and apple esters, grassy/earthy hoppiness, and straw-like grain that you feel as though you're drinking them right on the farm. This, frankly, has more of a sports bar feel - it's an ultra-light, over-carbonated and relatively tasteless beer.
Frankly, it's about as basic as beer gets, the yeasty frill notwithstanding. The taste is that of damp grain and has a faint cereal sweetness. There's little, if any fruity nuance. And while 'zesty' is a term used to describe many Saison, it won't be with this one; the peppercorn note barely moves the needle.
It pains me to write such a critical review because I generally enjoy 5 Paddles offerings. I really like the brewery and regularly recommend them to people. But I have to call a dud a dud: this isn't up-to-snuff as a Saison and is an insipid beer overall. Their general standard is much, much higher than this.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
