We brewed this Marzen style festbier a long time ago and let it lager several months to be released at the start of the true Oktoberfest in Munich. This special take on a marzen beer uses 3 different types of rye; malted rye, caramel rye, and flaked rye. This gives it a spicy rye complexity and nice light copper hue on this tasty, traditional German party beer.

poured from 16 oz can

dark orange rust colored, white head. aroma of toasted malt and a bit of fruitiness. similar taste - the rye comes across as more fruity than spicy. nice flavor. medium bodied.

This is a great Märzen. The rye elevates it to a point you can't tell what style this is, and in a good way. This is the kind of Oktoberfest beer that I can drink.

Ryetoberfest – from Griffin Claw. Single 16 fl oz can purchased from Horrocks’s Market, Kentwood, MI, 20/08/24, $ 3.06 (including tax and deposit), $ 0.185 /fl oz. Reviewed 29/08/24 (Review 3344). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Printed on the bottom rim “06/10/24”. On room temperature at the store. Stored at 34 degrees F at home. Served at 48.9 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 60.0 degrees F.
Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale Amber (SRM 9), clear.
Body – Medium Amber (SRM 12), opaque. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, medium amber and clear.
Head – Average (Maximum 4.5 cm, aggressive center pour), cream, high density, average retention, diminishing to an irregular 0.3 cm crown and complete, rocky cap.
Lacing – Very good! Wide band of near microscopic to tiny bubbles forms an arch tightly attached to the crown.
Aroma – 3 – Weak graininess with a hint of sourness. No hops, no malt, no alcohol (5.9% ABV, according to the label).
Flavor – 3.5 Earthy but lacking expected rye spiciness. No hops or alcohol. No dimethylsulfide or diacetyl. No gastric warming.
Palate – 4 – Medium; creamy; soft carbonation.
Final Impression and summation: 3.75 Highly quaffable. The flavor seems a bit messier and less straight forward than most Marzen – not bad, just a bit messy. I’d definitely buy this one again.

Had on tap. Clear amber brown body with a white head, spotted lacing. Aromas of rye, caramel malt, and very mild brown bread and nutiness, but rye is the clear lead, concerning me about balance. But actually this worked! The marzen malts with earthy tones from the rye are the lasting impression, with tones of dark nut, earthy spice, and bread along the way. Feel is malty with dryness from the rye impressed upon it, smooth and decently frothy on the finish, not crisp but it works because it doesn't try to be. I am honestly stunned this is as good as it is

I like rye in my beer. On the name alone I had to try this.

From the can a vigorous pour gives a generous cap of foam atop a warm, tan brown body.

First impressions note a lot of bready rye spice on the nose. There’s a punchy hop snap on the sip, almost grassy green, with a sharp finish. This one grew on me.
