Built for Indian cuisine, the experimental nature of Blue Stallion's "Test Batch Tuesday" lands them in a uniquely spiced world. With the incredible curry spice at its disposal, the wheat beer styles might never be the same again.
Beyond its cloudy golden austere, a faint head builds on top of the beer and begins shedding the overwhelming earthy perfume. Obvious curry overtones begin to overshadow the fruit and spice of the ale immediately. But its supple, bready-sweet upstart is common to weizen, as well as its citrusy tang that both greet the palate at the same time.
But the weizen character and the exotic spice character share the stage on the middle palate. Alternating banana and clove sway into the peppery, smoky and savory spiciness of curry and then seem to sway back. Peppercorn, lime and apple complement the mix while the ale favors a fleeting grainy-sweet finish.
Albeit thin in finish, the spices keep the session lively as their savory component brings out the bready, sweet and fruity flavors that linger softly in aftertaste. Light in body, the weizen has a tough time standing up to the curry. But the curry saves the day here.
