Rich, malty and given a generous dose of complexity with a year's long slumber in bourbon barrels; it appears that decadence in German lager making as met its match!
Gannuhn's luscious pour yields a dark mahogany hue with an ominous haze. Decadence in aroma comes over the nose with savory toasted malt, molasses, brown sugar, dark fruit an irresistible bourbon. Its flavor is densely packed with those toasty, savory, meaty sweetness while sharing hints of brownie, spice-cake and bread pudding.
As the ale warms and the flavors unfold on the middle palate, a host of sweet flavors continue to emerge. Toasted toffee, caramel, honey, oak, vanilla, cream, chocolate, coffee, toast, pastry crust and kaluha all share the stage and allow new flavors to emerge with every sip. Currant, grape, cherry, fig and date show an earthy sweet, lightly tar-like taste in the beer's waning flavors along with the savory, spicy and sweet taste of both bourbon and rum.
Full and lightly syrupy, the beer's viscous body creeps upon the tongue with creamy density and a nutella-like lushness. Fading with toast, chocolate and bourbon the beer brings Kentucky bourbon-ball dessert bites to mind with a simmering warmth that calderns from below. A long malty aftertaste makes this dopplebock a cool weather delight.
