12oz bottle acquired in trade.

Poured a medium and clear orange color with an averaged sized off white head. Muted aromas of grain and some caramel. Tastes of caramel, grain and citrus. Both the aromas and tastes on the weaker side.

12 oz undated bottle - newer label than pictured

A - Pours a brownish red color with a fair amount of bubbling and head. Overall combination appears to be light. While dark in color, is has very little haze.

S - Tart and acidic. Very strong. Almost oxidized in ways. Very strong and floral - perhaps yeast, or cherries. Not to style IMHO.

T - Starts with a malty sweet flavor or roasted flavors. Not much bitterness in the midstream. Ends with a strong cherry like flavor. The more I drink this the more I think of sweet cherries.

M - Not very much body - but lots of carbonation bite. Stings as I swish it around.

D - I would find this as a good single beer to enjoy with a dinner. Repeated drinking may not be good for me due to carbonation height, ABV, and the somewhat tiring strong sweet flavor.

Purchased as part of "build-your-own-six-pack" at local grocer. Poured a large, foamy, yet quickly disappearing head on an amber body. Smell is very sweet, strong caramel and equally strong floral tones. Taste follows, but much strong on the sweetness. Tasted more and more like a wine cooler the more I drank. Fairly fizzy, despite that disappearing head. Started out nocely, but gradually became less and less enjoyable. Disappointing.

Poured a medium copper color with massive white chunky head. Great retention and some nice sticky lacing.

Smell is somewhat understated with only a modest amount of caramel to be found.

Taste is very pleasant, there is a significant malt character to be refreshing, with some light balancing cryness.

Good taste retention with a long lingering sweet-dry mouthfeel.

Perfect drinkability. Would be perfect to session.

A - Poured out a reddish-copper color with a small, fizzy, white head. It was highly carbonated and left some light trails of lace.

S - It smelled malty and floral. A fairly sweet smelling beer.

T - It had a smooth, rich, roasted malt taste with a subtle hop kick and a sweet, fruitiness.

M - It was smooth and crisp. A light to medium-bodied beer.

D - A pretty descent red ale. It is worth a try for a session.

Berghoff "famous" Red "Ale", after a hard pour,
reveals a stiff, fluffy head over a honey colored
brew. Carbonation is active and steady, and the
nose is, oh oh, corn and lager yeast. The flavor is
some sweet corn, a little malt, boiled vegetables,
and a little grassy hop off the end. There's a sort
of tartness that does not go at all well with the hops.
The aftertaste is grassy, and the mouthfeel is crisp
and dry. Vaguely unpleasant. This seems like an
attempt at a sort of darker cream ale, but the result
is this strange, freakish chimera.

A-pours amber with some red tendencies, the head is offwhite and a couple fingers worth at that,it leaves little to no lacing behind

S-floral,purfume,and some sweet malts as well

T-lightly roasted malts that are slightly sweet, some tart berry flavors, and bitterness comes through on the tail end

M-light body, and soft carbonation made the mouthfeel a winner, but still nothing to get excited about

D-I don't think this stuff is famous by a long shot, but it is drinkable

This beer was poured into a pint glass at 52° from a 12 ounce bottle with coded information that I was unable to decipher for dating. Two fingers of head were produced from the pour with lacing as the head receded. The beer was clear and amber in color with an orange tinge.

A slight floral scent came off to start. A hint of malt aroma was there later on.

There was a sweet malty taste followed by brown sugar.

The mouth seemed to pick up carbonation from the beer. A light sweetness stayed for just a little while and then everything disappeared.

This was better than average beer and slightly better than an average red ale. It just quite doesn't make it to the next level though.

sweet malty nose. a little fruit. no off odors.

fruity and sweet at once. toasty fruit aftertaste. balance ok.

low carbonation. lighter body. some lace. decent beer. could drink more than a few. smooth beer. goes down nice. i would drink again. a little light for style to me.

Poured into an American pint.

Color is dark clover honey. Thick 2 finger head that settles to a 1/2 finger rocky head. Looks crunchy.

Aroma is sweet. Sweet roasted malts with a honey whiff. Floral clover honey with sweet candied yam.

Flavor is apple up front. I get a good dose of green apple, which over powers pretty much anything else. I could swear I'm almost drinking a cider. Slight hop tinge, but not much.

Mouthfeel is disappointing. Thin and watery. Carbonation is over done. Very fizzy and thin.

I could drink more than one, but that cloying apple flavor might do me in.

Overall not too bad. A perfect beer for the "dark beer is too bitter for me" crowd. This would certainly prove them wrong.

My bottle does say that this is from the Joseph Huber brewing company. Berghoff is now moved out of Huber Brewery and re-branded as Minhas , so I don't know if my example was dated or just an old label.

Yet another harrowing entry into my "Dad's fridge" series of reviews...

Clear, light amber body with a decent enough head. Lacing is more or less nonexistent. Head retention is actually quite good.

Sweet, somewhat buttery malt scent followed a husk and faintly metallic odors.

There's a lot not to like here. Corn-like sweetness rushes into a burnt amber malt flavor. Drifts into an almost macro-lager middle only to finish stale and grassy.

Although creamy and smooth at first, the body devolves into a watery state, never to recover. This is a prime example for me as to what is wrong with this style; totally uninspired with a "well, we gotta do an amber" feel to it. Not recommended.
