Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

Part two of my six-part Berghoff evening tasting, which didn't start off very hearteningly with the Sundown Dark. This one pours a clear light amber topped by a finger of short-lived lightly dirty white foam. The nose comprises light caramel, light black pepper, and a touch of flowers. Things are a tad muted. The taste brings in a touch more hop character, mostly in the form of extra flowers and added greens, but the caramel, which is now drier and more biscuit-y, is still dominant. The body is a hefty light, with a light moderate carbonation and a slightly dry finish. Overall, a fairly mediocre pale ale, but, compared to other Minhas brews, at least this one isn't entirely objectionable...just not all that favorable.

Beer poured into a Mug shaped glass

A - Beer poured with a brown colored body; a one finger white colored foam formed on the top of the pour; the head did not hold well and dissipated rather quickly; well carbonated; some lacing formed on the side of the glass

S - Ale crispiness; subtle notes of dark fruit scented malts; peanuts; caramel; light odors

T - Dark fruit malt flavors; lager airiness; light flavors of nut and yeast; lacks a lot of bite though; could be more flavorful; some roasted notes

M - Slight stinginess; sour feel on the sides of the tongue and burning; watery but solid body feel; tastes good for an american pale ale; slightly bitter back-end; slightly creamy feel too

D - Alight for an ale; dark fruit flavors were great and enjoyable

A: A bottle that does not match the photo on this website. No freshness date seen on the bottle. Pours an appropriate amber color with very little head but some lacing on the glass.

S: No hop aroma with kind of a fruity and possibly oxidized cool-aide smell.

T: I hope I got an oxidize bottle because it was very unpleasant. No hop aroma or flavor. This was labeled as a pale ale...WTF?

M: Low to medium carbonation.

D: I didn't finish this beer. I'll save my liver cells for more flavorful offerings.

Poured a dark brown color with a small amount of head on it. Smells a bit spicy, some caramel. Not much hops at all. Taste is about the same. Little bit of aftertaste, not bad though. Relatively smooth feel. Easy drinking beer. Not a great beer in my opinion, but it's alright. I could have a few more, but probably will try something else.

It had an average bronze body that had to be poured hard just to get some head and lace. I felt the body was watery and a little soapy. What little bit of lace there was tight. It has pasture like aroma. Its flavor is grainy and pasture like at first followed by a sweet adjunct like aftertaste. The mouthfeel is somewhat light.

A: Pours a darker caramel color. A little bit of head. Fairly unimpressive.

S: Some malty sweetness, a hint of caramel. Virtually no hops.

T: Same as the nose. The malt leads this one all the way, but not in a strong manner. The caramel malt taste is there, with a hint of sweetness. Hops are there providing a bit of balance, but for an APA, it needs a bit more of a hop kick. I'm not expecting IPA level, but I expect it to have a hint more bitterness where this has practically none.

M: Thin, average carbonation, and generally average.

D: It's alright. I probably wouldn't go for it again. Worth trying, but there are a lot better APAs out there.

First, the pour - hazy amber with a thin and wispy ivory head. But now, the aroma - another Berghoff brew with this cooked veggie smell. And this is a pale ale!!??!!

Taste is even worse. Cardboard, cooked veggies and no hop presence what-so-ever. Gritty, harsh finish with rotten grain leading the way. I'm afraid that any more Berghoff's will not find themselves in my cart anytime soon.

This one kind of gushed as it opened, not a good sign.

Pours a chill-hazed effervescent gold with 2 fingers of rocky sand colored head. Cleared nicely, very good head retention & lacing

S: Cereal notes & lemony hops, plus breadyness

T: Herbal hops, grainyness, slight breadyness, plus some crisp citric notes up front. Breadyness & grainy astringency battle it out as this warms, the astringency almost wins, plus a touch of grapefruit. Finishes pretty crisp, with some nice bready notes, astringency prevents this from pulling a 3.5

MF: Light/medium bodied, poor balance, slightly over carbonated

Drinks alright, but more balance is needed to salvage this, let this warm up quite a bit. Still better than most from this brewery

Pours a clear yellow color. 1/3 inch head with decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of bread malt, very slight hops, and slight metallic aroma. With the low bitterness level both in aroma and flavor, I'd say this is a bad example of an American Pale Ale. Smooth and crisp mouth feel with a high carbonation level. There's a strong metallic taste, along with slight malt. Not really picking up hops at - what the heck is going on here. Overall, not a good Pale Ale, at all. I'm not going to try this again or recommend to anyone.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with JCapriotti (thanks!).

Poured a medium and clear amber color with a smaller sized off white head. Aromas of citrus, caramel and lemon pledge. Bland tastes of citrus and bready. Nothing really stands out about this except the lemon pledge aroma.

Berghoff Pale Ale pours a couple fingers of rocky head over a deep
gold colored brew. Carbonation is steady, the nose is fruity english
ale yeast. The flavor is mild toasty malts balanced by herbal hops.
Mouthfeel is crisp, and there's a bit of grass in the aftertaste. A pretty
decent stab at the English Pale Ale style, this is about the best brew
out of my Berghoff sampler pack. The brew is not bad, but on the other
hand, there's probably a brewery near you that puts out a better Pale
Ale. I wouldn't say it's worth seeking this one out, but if Berghoff's all
you got, hopefully it's this one.

Poured a crystal clear light copper color with modest white puffy head. Poor retention. No lacing.

Smell shows a suprisingly strong hop presence, with some hice citrus notes.

Taste blends the malt and hop perfectly. There is enought sweet malt character to balance the hoppiness perfectly. Very refreshinf and tasty.

Leaves a very nice hop/malt taste in the mouth.

Perfect drinkability. Very flavorful. A trult enjoyable taste experience.

A - Poured out an orange/amber color with a very foamy, tan, three-finger head. It left nice sticky rings of lace.

S - It smelled of citrus, grassy hops and some roasted malt.

T - It had a sweet citrus flavor with a bitter kick from the hops. Also, a toasty malt taste was present.

M - It was sharp and very crisp. A medium-bodied beer.

D - Probably the best beer with the Berghoff name. A good APA.

S-Nice balance of biscuity malt and floral fresh hops, honey and spice.

T/M-Really refreshing, nicely balanced with a mild bitter finish.Medium/light mouthfeel with seltzery carbonation.

D-This is good stuff.Nothing crazy but an excellent value usually a buck or two less than the big macros.

Poured from the bottle into a pint glass, beer is a clear, golden-orange color with a thin, fine-bubbly head. Smell isn't very aggressive, faint malty notes and a hint of hops. The taste is decently balanced, leaning towards the bitter side. A biscuity malt flavor with a bitter hop finish that I can't really put my finger on. The mouthfeel is light in body with a fairly aggressive, tongue-attacking carbonation. Drinkability of this one is about average, not a bad beer, but nothing really impressive about it either.

Poured into a standard American pint.

Poured a nice light honey color with a thick, rocky three finger head that fell to a nice cap that left sticky lace all over.

Smell is hops, almost fresh hops with a nice malt backbone.

Flavor is estery hops with a good alcohol backing. Malt takes mid-stage on this one . The hops are fresh smelling and they taste just as good.

The feel on the mouth is really nice. Creamy body with a nice subtle carbonation that lends itself well to this beer. I like the smoothness on the tongue.

Drinkability is awesome I could really put down a lot of these.

Overall this is a nice, mild Pale that is'nt ovelry hoppy, but still has that nice hop flavor. For the style and the distro this one is really good.

a: pours a medium red/golden color with a about an inch of bubbly white head that dissapears quickly leaving a little ring of lace around the edge of the glass
s: the sweet malty aromas are the first thing that i sense here, follow by the citrusy hops aroma that does give a sense of invitingness
t: fruity malt flavors really come out strong following a nice citrusy bitterness flavors from the hops
m: light to medium bodied beer with a good amount of carbonation

overall, this wasnt too bad, it was cheap i think $5.99 for a 6er..i liked this and believe that i will have it again

Poured a 12oz bottle into a Chimay chalice. Pours a yellowish orange with a nice clean white head that leaves subtle lacing down the side of the glass. Smell is sweetly hoppy. Interesting mix. Taste is citrus hops with a nice malt backbone. Mouthfeel is fuller for the style with a nice carbonation. Extremely drinkable.

Pours a clear, nearly-brilliant golden-orange in color, topped with a frothy off-white head and exhibiting good lacing characteristics. Nose is interesting, light floral hops were about what I'd expected, pale and toasted malts come across par for the style and producer (especially), but the notes of clover honey and ginger (!) were a surprise. Frankly, the nose is fairly fruity but with much more malt depth than I'd expected. After the head subsides the lace remains, and as I'd poured this into an imperial pint glass the nose is really working some magic here, even despite the straight-from-the-'fridge temperature! Mildly sweet on the first sip, with some chewy biscuit malt in the mid-palate and a nice touch of hop bitterness. The floral hop aromatics aren't making as big an impression throughout as they did on the nose upon pouring, but I think this is due to the beer being a bit old*. More light honey notes throughout and bitterness is better represented as this warms. Mouthfeel is better than average and the drinkability is good, if not truly remarkable. A better than average example and rendition of the style, although I'd say it leans closer to a British Style Pale Ale.

A great value at any rate!

*A note on the date: thermal ink on the bottle has the following code: 3006 18. If this beer is indeed a year old then it has held up remarkably well, less the hop profile I'd think. But it says a lot for the quality of the beer they brew down 'der in Monroe!

A-Ale poured to a darkish yellow color. Had a little head that disappered pretty fast. Leaving a light lacing around the glass. That lacing remained throughout the drinking. Each swallow left a noticeable ring.
S-Had a smell of oranges or maybe lemon. You could also smell a hint of alcohol.
T-Tasted a little sweet almost fruity like. Taste was a little strong. But not to overwhelming. Overall it had a good flavor.
M-Mouthfeel was good. You could definatly tell you had something
in your mouth. Carbonation was good. It was a light feeling in your mouth.
D-I could drink a few of these all the time. Will buy again. Berghoff gives you a good beer in this case ale at an affordable price.

A- Deep golden yellow supported a thin wisp which then faded.

S- Good solid citrus aroma.

T- Nice mellow hop bite preceeded by a light malt sweetness.

M- Pretty decent.

D- Sure I'll have annother, I enjoyed this one with fish sticks (yeah, I know, I'm sooo classy).

A good way for a non hophead to start venturing into the world of stronger pales.

Appearance: Pours a clear, light coppy body with a wispy white head.

Smell: Faint, almost unappealing aroma of musty grains and a drop or two of lemon.

Taste: Mild grainy taste and caramel, though the latter doesn't impart much sweetness. Light citrus hop flavor. Finish provides a subtle bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium carbonation.

Drinkability: Pretty dull, even for a pale ale.

Eye: Very nice to the eye. light orange/copper with yellow highlights. The beer is crystal clear has great head retention, and also has nice lacing. Carbonation makes it look alive.

Nose: This brew has a nice laid-back hop aroma to it. Aroma is from what I'll be guessing is cascade hops, a little floral with citrus tones as well. Not very potent though, at first it seems strong, when the beer was first poured, though now it is like I have to work to get the aroma.

Tongue: Bitterness right upfront from bittering hops. Then a hop flavor smoldered by metallic and iron twangs. Weak malt backbone on this brew, not really much going on with it, hop flavor is weak as well. Not impressed with this one.

Mouthfeel and Drinkability: Watery and fizzy ... like tonic water on the palate. Body is weak and light and it finishes with pretty much no aftertaste. This beer is easy to drink but lacks in flavor, I won't be buying this again because there are much better APAs out there. However this is a beer you could drink all night long, and probably one of the best cheap offerings there are at $5.79 a six pack.

12oz bottle, no freshness date, poured into pint glass.

A: This pale ale is a good deal lighter than most I've encountered and almost looks like a lager. Pours a clear and light copper with a pillowy off-white head, very nice retention and decent lacing down the side of the glass.

S: Good deal of bread crust and sweet biscut with a nice coriander and citus aroma a nice appetizing batch of aromas in this beer yet nothing stands out, very nicely balanced.

T/MF: Big bread and biscut with a big hop bitterness that clings to the tongue but with little hop flavor and is pretty dissapointing in that respect. I like bitter beers but this one seems out of balance but maybe that is because I am too enamoured with Cascade hops which this beer appears to lack. Still a nice malt presence which I think saves this beer.

D: Not a bad beer for the price but I still think I'd shell out the extra buck or two for a different pale ale.
