Still is burdened by that harsh sweetness most of these hard root beers have. About on the same plane as Not Your Father's Root Beer in terms of the sweetness and taste but not anywhere close to the real smoothness and creaminess of Coney Island Hard Root Beer. They're still the go-to for great, hard soda products.

Not much to say. Another 'root beer-beer'. Sweet, with aromas and flavors of sassafrass, a hearty amount of vanilla, mild anise, all the other requisite root beer flavors. Feel was a touch thicker than the actual soda. I'm impressed with the 6.6% alcohol hidden in there. If you're into this kind of stuff, it's good.

12 fl oz. can, no real canned on date or information present. Acquired a single can from a friend. Brewed by Berghoff Brewery out of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, so I'm not entirely sure why the brewery is listed under Illinois.

Poured into a Revolution Brewing Anti-Hero IPA can glass.

A - Pours a typical cola soda like appearance - one finger of quickly fading off-white head that audibly fizzles it's way out of existence.

S - A dusty soda-like aroma. Nothing to suggest that this has alcohol in it, or "beer" at all. Fizzy & dusty, with some notes of vanilla.

T - Again, nothing in the flavor to suggest that this has alcohol in it, or any semblance of actual "beer" flavor. Merely tastes like traditional store bought root beer. Sugary & sweet.

M - Feel is sticky, sugary, & sweet. Medium-bodied, moderate carb.

Overall, not my favorite of the hard root beers. I much prefer Small Town Not Your Father's Root Beer or Coney Island Hard Root Beer over this.

Berghoff Hard Root Beer -----3/5.

Rowdy Root Beer.

This is supposedly the new big hard rootbeer in town. Found a single can of it for $2.19 and I needed to round out a mix a six and figured why the hell not. Can is pretty cool...wonder if the can will determine any aspects of the flavor. Enough talk, let's dive in.

Look - From the twelve ounce can into a dimpled mug. Pours a crystal clear amber with an off white head that appears very soda like in nature, standing an initial two fingers in height though quickly dies down into nothing though not before giving a show of bubbly explosions. Beer appears to have zero carbonation.

Smell - Big levels of molasses and medicinal aspects on this nose. Chalky esque though very apparently a hard root beer. Artificial sweetener. Not much else to say in this department.

Taste - Tastes almost exactly like one of those old root beer suckers I remember back when I was just a kid. Molasses is very apparent as is a slight amount of that chalky aspect. Lingering birch like woody sweetness is left long after the swallow. Sweetness is apparent though not as strong as the other hard root beers which will please some and be of distatlste to others.

Feel - Body is surprisingly thick and syrup like. Carbonation is completely nonexistant. Beer coats the mouth like...well syrup as I started. The birchy flavor really dominates the feel and the beer swallows easily with just a touch of the 6.6%.

Overall - I'd say every category here will likely get a different number. An interesting take on the category but not as good as the coney island version. The higher alcohol content is welcome and this would make a fine drink if you're a 22 year old skank and want to become pregnant in the bathroom of a concert venue. Decent swill overall..

This is much better than Not Your Father's Root Beer. Tastes like real, natural, small batch rootbeer. Obviously you taste none of the 6.6% alcohol. Only complaint is that it's slightly undercarbed. It's good.
