Starting with a base of U.S. 2-row pilsner malt, we add just enough lightly-kilned Vienna and Munich malts to add a slight caramel character. Hops are New World versions of European classics, smooth and clean, but with some real personality as well.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy bright golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, light honey, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness after the finish from bitterness. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good Dortmunder style. All around good robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and clean to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Had this on draft at the restaurant and at their Oktoberfest event across the block. Pleasantly surprised at this one but also reinforced the fact of how much I tend to enjoy this style and will seek it out more often.

Pours no head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is grain and lemon.
The taste is lemon and metallic bitterness.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
It's okay.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #81 (Oct 2013):
This brew has all of the underpinnings for a Dortmunder Lager, though we were looking for a cleaner & deeper crispness. Aside from that (and it being pretty damn drinkable), this ends up being quite a superb brew.
STYLE: Dortmunder Lager
ABV: 5.5%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round
LOOK: Bright pale golden, excellent lacing
SMELL: Clean graininess, loaf of bread, herbal hop, slightly spicy, grassy, lemon pith
TASTE: Sufficient crispness, moderate-sized body, dry maltiness, crackers, herbal; balanced hop bitterness; faint wild honey, grainy; drying, hoppy finish

I usually like a malty lager, but often find the Vienna style too sweet. I think this one does a great job of mixing the two, it's grain driven, more than the same old base pils malt, a tad sweet, but way more drinkable than the Vienna types. Just darker than golden, not much head, but a really nice carbonation on the palate. Some body for a pale lager, creamy a little too, but still crispy in the finish. Easily my favorite if the beers I had from Berghoff this week, and while still a real basic lager, it has some real character.
