Style: European Export / Dortmunder

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 5.50%

Availability: Year-round

Notes / Commercial Description:
Starting with a base of U.S. 2-row pilsner malt, we add just enough lightly-kilned Vienna and Munich malts to add a slight caramel character. Hops are New World versions of European classics, smooth and clean, but with some real personality as well.

12 ounce bottle into lager glass, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy bright golden yellow color with a 1 finger dense white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a light amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of pale malt and earthy hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of cracker, lightly toasted biscuit, light honey, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Moderate amount of herbal/spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of cracker, biscuit, light honey, pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; with a nice malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Good amount of dryness after the finish from bitterness. Very clean on lager flavors with zero yeast ester notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very good Dortmunder style. All around good robustness and balance of pale malt and earthy hop flavors; and very smooth, crisp, and clean to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

Had this on draft at the restaurant and at their Oktoberfest event across the block. Pleasantly surprised at this one but also reinforced the fact of how much I tend to enjoy this style and will seek it out more often.

Pours no head on a clear straw body.
The aroma is grain and lemon.
The taste is lemon and metallic bitterness.
The texture is crisp and fizzy.
It's okay.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #81 (Oct 2013):

This brew has all of the underpinnings for a Dortmunder Lager, though we were looking for a cleaner & deeper crispness. Aside from that (and it being pretty damn drinkable), this ends up being quite a superb brew.

STYLE: Dortmunder Lager
ABV: 5.5%
AVAILABILITY: Year-round

LOOK: Bright pale golden, excellent lacing

SMELL: Clean graininess, loaf of bread, herbal hop, slightly spicy, grassy, lemon pith

TASTE: Sufficient crispness, moderate-sized body, dry maltiness, crackers, herbal; balanced hop bitterness; faint wild honey, grainy; drying, hoppy finish

I usually like a malty lager, but often find the Vienna style too sweet. I think this one does a great job of mixing the two, it's grain driven, more than the same old base pils malt, a tad sweet, but way more drinkable than the Vienna types. Just darker than golden, not much head, but a really nice carbonation on the palate. Some body for a pale lager, creamy a little too, but still crispy in the finish. Easily my favorite if the beers I had from Berghoff this week, and while still a real basic lager, it has some real character.

355ml bottle. Minhas by yet another name. Reviewed August 6, 2013, now moved here for historical accuracy (and because I was asked somewhat nicely to do so).

This beer pours a clear, medium golden amber colour, with two fingers of puffy and loosely foamy dirty white head, which leaves a few streaks of wave splash lace around the glass as it rather quickly bleeds away.

It smells of gritty, grainy pale malt, stale apples, earthy, dead leaf hops, and a slightly medicinal booze warming. The taste is semi-sweet grainy, somewhat raw dough-like bready malt, more mushy, overripe drupe fruitiness, a touch of unflavoured cough medicine, and faint earthy, musty hops.

The carbonation is fairly flaccid and innocuous, if barely supportive, the body an adequate medium weight, and more than a tad pithy, with a plastered on smoothness. It finishes off-dry, the alcohol gaining a certain rubbing 'quality', as the grainy malt duly cedes its perch, and the bland fruitiness maintaining its earlier age statement.

Not getting a lot of the crisp, biscuity notes that one might expect of a true Dortmunder lager. Another at least non-chest-heave inducing Minhas product, but with miles yet to go before attaining any sort of style respectability.

12oz brown longneck poured into my SA perfect pint glass, the beer is a chill hazed gold with a fairly thick white head.

Grains and grass on the nose.

The taste is slightly sweet with crackers, a bit of something earthy and a touch of pear. Berghoff seems to have changed their yeast strain as the bubble gum like esters are thankfully gone.

The mouth is medium thickness. I would like to see a bit more carbonation.

All-in-all a fairly enjoyable beer.

I mistakenly let this warm a bit before pouring. Corn comes out more. Poured with a nice, large, foamy, frothy, off-white head that soon settled to a light cover and a little lace. Color is a clear yellow with some bubble trails. Aroma is corn first then malt and a hint of hop. Flavor's very similar to nose, but strong carbonation adds significant tang. Body and carbonation are ok. Finish is a little like flavor but morphs into something not as pleasant and too long.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours clear golden yellow with white foam on top. Some bubbles. Rich nose, bright smell. Light citrus too. Light lagery taste with some body. Extra extra sweet - like corn. The taste worsens as more is consumed. Its all off, and not great.

No sir, I did not like it. Perhaps a consult with GLBC on there dortmunder is recommended?

Refreshing beer, silly name.

When I saw the Berghoff Dortwunder 12 pack on the shelf, I assumed that the description read, "Dortmunder". Nope. DortWunder. A 'too cutesey' name for a serious beer.

Poured with a nice three-finger head that remained intact for the first few sips, but transformed into some nice lacing.

Once I got past the silly name, I was very impressed by the beer, which is a very good representation of the style. Sweetness of the malt hits the palate first, but is immediately balanced by the hops. Very smooth and drinkable.

I've been a fan of the Berghoff brand (actually a fan of the Minhas (nee Huber ) Brewery) for decades, but it seems that the quality has slipped a bit. Minhas reverses that trend with this offering.

I'm going to enjoy the balance of the 12 pack with friends and definitely look for more.

A winner from Minhas.

This beer is the best Berghoff offering in a long time! It has a fantastic golden color and leaves a compact, persistent head. Smell is nice soft floral hop. Taste excels with pure balance coming through. It starts out very malty and goes out with a nice hop bite. Mouthfeel is smooth/substantial. This is what I would call a "back in the day" beer; in a good way. Hope Minhas doesn't screw this one up as they have done so many times before. This is one I will buy all summer.
