This American barleywine will derail you if not careful. This medium to full bodied ale packs a powerful punch, but is also very approachable for such a big beer. Unlike some barleywines our barleywine finishes dry without cloying sweetness. A medium hop bitterness balances out the body and caramel malt flavors. Rye barrel aging steps up the complexity adding a distinct spiciness.

Pours a nice walnut furniture color almost like my bedroom set, darker reddish brown that is illuminated when held to the light. A one finger tan head falls to a ring with not much lace.

Aroma is nice big on the rye bourbon barrel notes riding on a sweet caramel base with some hints of darker fruits fig sweetness blended with the caramel. Nice amount of hops in the nose even though the sweetness comes through well earthy, herbal and some resin like light pine.

Taste is not quite as good as the nose , even though the bottle says American style I was hoping that it was more English like since the nose leaned that way. Some caramel sweetness but not was big as you would assume some hints of the darker fruits but again lighter. The barrel notes are also not as predominate in the flavor. Hops are enough to keep it on the right side of cloying flavors are good but not as hop forward as an American style should be. Really drinks a little to light for a big beer and flavors are more of lighter old ale than either style Barleywine. Again try this for yourself I might be a little hard on it because its not quite what my nose told me it would be.

Mouthfeel is medium defiantly on the bigger side of medium but doesn't feel like a big beer. Carbonation is wonderful nice smooth and mellow.

Overall the nose is heavenly the taste is just good, maybe this one needs some age not because it's hot but maybe to bring out the malts more. My opinion this one would of benefited from a touch of cloying sweetness or go the other way and hop the shit out of it so it's more American.
