22 fl oz bottle sealed with silver pressure cap.
As soon as pressure cap is popped about 8 oz of the beer gushes out of the bottle; remainder of beer poured into HF wine stem.
Appearance: light black cola colored body with a 4 finger tall head (Beer was poured at room temperature). Beer quickly drops to a thin uneven cap. Not much lacing; very scant.
Smell: Milk chocolate, cocoa nibs, cola, peppers, and vanilla beans. This smells very chocolate forward. Not a hint of coffee.
Taste: The stout starts off bitter and full of heat from the cayenne. Heat never really goes away and has a pretty strong profile in this beer. Not getting much chocolate flavor like the nose promised to be present in the beer. Tasting bitter coffee rinds. Hint of cola and vanilla sweetness. Peppers linger on forever into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: On the lower end of a medium bodied stout. Carbonation is low, but adequate, Drinkability is low and slow because of too much heat from the peppers.
Overall: Peppers dominate. No balancing from the sweeter ingredients used to brew the beer. I am not sure, but I think that the brewer was going for an extreme or intense pepper beer here. Despite the gushing, I dont think that this beer is infected. No sourness; no obvious off flavors or aromas are noted. I wonder if this bottle gushed because I did not heed the "keep chilled" and "serve at 45 to 55 degrees" instructions on the bottle...
