Reviewed from notes taken at Legenda in Budapest in Summer 2014.
12% ABV. Seved on-draught into stemware. Cost was 450 forent. Imperial stout.
HEAD: 2 fingers in height. Khaki colour. Nice creaminess and thickness. Poor (~30 second) retention. No lacing.
BODY: Opaque solid jet black. No yeast/sediment is visible within. Appears undercarbonated. Not unique or special looking, but appealing.
AROMA: Dark malts, enticing roasted barley, chocolate malt, cream, molasses. No overt yeast or hops. No booziness or off-notes.
A pleasant aroma of moderate strength.
TASTE: Dark malts, roasted barley, chocolate malts, cream, some faint alcohol warmth, and general malty sweetness. It's rather uninspired for an imperial stout, lacking expressiveness. Shallow.
Average flavour intensity and duration.
Alcohol warmth carries in the stomach. Balanced but simplistic and one-dimensional. There's just not much flavour here.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, lightly creamy, unrefreshing. Warm. Thick and full-bodied to style.
A creamier silkier feel would be preferable. This suits the taste decently, but fails to accentuate specific notes.
OVERALL: A sipper, but it drinks easily enough for its high ABV. I like it for what it is, but it's lacking compared to the best Swedish, Danish, Canadian, and American examples of the style. I wouldn't get it again, but at this price it's absolutely worth trying once.
