A winter warmer and ideal companion for the travelers and pub dwellers of Middle-earth, this classic old ale, aged in PX sherry barrels, is full-bodied and rich with the aroma and flavor of dark fruit, caramel, and the intense complexities of sherry and oak.

750mL acquired from the brewery. $15. No bottling date but released 01/2017. Served in a Three Taverns snifter.
Pours a dark, fully opaque ruby chestnut with a little less than two fingers of manilla head. The froth fades, leaving a thin film of retention and narrow collar which imparts some patchy lacing.
Tons of sherry in the nose along with wet wood, dark fruit and bread. If you like sherry barrel then there is no reason you wouldn't enjoy this aroma.
Flavors of sherry, earthy wet oak, leather, raisin toast, caramel, red grape skins and some occasional nips of alcohol. As in the smell, nothing quite tops the presence of wet, woodsy sherry.
Smooth, creamy full body with fairly restrained carbonation. Sherry, dark fruit, caramel and oak in the aftertaste.
Third Age is some more quality barrel work from Three Taverns. Not for someone that may not care for sherry but those barrels really bring out the dark fruit character in a very good old ale.

This is my first old ale, which reminded me a lot of a barleywine. The beer looks fantastic with it brownish/burgundy color, and it smelled great too. The flavor was very good. I'm looking forward to my second bottle.
