750mL bottle picked up at the brewery. 2018 release (I believe November). Served in a Three Taverns teku. Enjoyed 1/1/19.
Pours black with a healthy cap of khaki froth. The head fades to a thin central island and full collar, imparting a few small streaks of lace.
Smells of sweet bourbon, wet oak, over cooked chocolate cookies and a little dark fruit.
The distinct lactose flavor is right up front. Bourbon, fudge, a dark fruity yeast-like note, vanilla, caramel, a hint of coconut, toast and barrel. The alcohol is noticeable but not near what might be expected for 12.5%.
Creamy, fullish feel with lightly fizzing carbonation. Smooth, sweet finish of bourbon and malted milk balls.
Another strong entry to Three Taverns’ barrel aged releases. Mount Fang is a seriously flavorful milk stout with enough lactose to stand up to what I perceive as Belgian yeast. This could be a great launchpad for some adjunct and barrel variants.
