The Condemner is a foray into the peculiar for us. It starts with imperial sweet stout that was aged in French oak port barrels for 22 months, picking up notes of fig and dark chocolate along the way. We then pulled it and added hand-toasted macadamia nuts, toasted coconut, Madagascar vanilla beans and marzipan to help balance out the tannins and spice from the French oak. To us, the result is a decadently layered and complex beer with profound nuttiness, tame coconut, balanced sweetness and just a hint of Luxardo cherry on the back end.

poured from a 750mL bottle into a snifter. pours an inky black with virtually no head. crazy sweet on the nose - cold it is only what i can assume is the marzipan, however, as it warms up the coconut and vanilla sweetness take hold along with the port barrel which gives off cherries and dark fruits. chocolate, sweet coconut and vanilla, cherries, ameretto liqueur all in the taste. it’s a lot going on and while it’s tasty, it’s a lot of assess. fairly full mouthfeel that never gets too oaky or dry. the port barrels work here. they don’t shine until it warms up but even then they just compliment the base stout and its adjuncts. really enjoyable stout from AC.

This was a really good release from AC. Port barrel, dark fruit, and marzipan on the nose. Overall there’s a great sweetness, but it’s kept in check and isn’t cloying. Coconut is fairly subtle, and the macadamia is surprisingly present. Great balance. Best from these guys in awhile.
