Good head production and decent retention.

Nose is incredibly decadent and rich, with waves and waves of chocolate, along with notes of cream, vanilla, cookie, caramel, and a bit of coffee.

Surprisingly thin on the palate for what I expected - which is to say, it's quite thick, but it's not chewy. Drinks more like a throwback dessert stout (think: Southern Tier) in that regard than a modern pastry stout. Alcohol is noticeable but very smooth.

That relative (relative!) thinness results in a flavor profile that doesn't immediately impact you ... until it clocks you out of nowhere and doesn't relent, even after your corner has thrown in the towel. Oh, this is a beer that is getting disqualified, for sure, but it's a damn impressive performance that you can't stop watching. Long, long finish, the bell signaling the end of the round only a memory.

Up front notes are grape, toffee, cherry, caramel, and coffee. Once the chocolate, cream, and cookie notes hit roughly around the second third, or perhaps right in the middle of the sip, they simply don't stop. Chocolate, cookie, chocolate, cookie, red grape, chocolate, cookie, coffee, cream, chocolate, cookie, vanilla, chocolate, cookie ... I would say rinse and repeat, but DO NOT rinse this beer under any circumstances! Let it sit there and savor the incredible lasting finish.

An absolute joy from the masters of pastry stouts. Incredible.
