Barrel-aged Brett Biere de Mars
Augmenter, French for Rise, is our take on a French style spring beer. Fermented in stainless tanks with a blend of Biere de Garde and Saison yeasts, then aged for 12 months in Cabernet, Chardonnay, Red Zin, and Tequila barrels with Brett, this orange beauty exhibits notes of citrus, peach, flowers, and hay, and a finishing touch of tartness.

Bought two cans from Beer Drop.
A very pleasant surprise. I thought this could be confused and confusing... the Brett, the aging in tequila, red and white wine barrels ... and very little experience for comparisons between the de Mars variation and its parent, the biere de garde style.
But, Diebolt put together Augmenter very nicely. Each seemingly diffuse element complements the next for an overall satisfying ale.
Augmenter opens with well above average Looks, a nice foam not typical of Brett use. Smells are largely citrus fruit, but there is sweeter stuff in there. Tastes largely follow with the Brett asserting itself mid-palate and has dryness in the finish. There are enough bubbles and Brett to cleanse the palate to refresh. I saved some to test Augmenter at the table, but I had no beer de gardes cold enough to drink for the taste test. So, I had Augmenter with Bob's world famous ratatouilles and did the same with a go-to saison. The Saison easily won, but that mostly is because I have a bias against Brett at the table.
I'm becoming a fan of Diebolt. Only my fourth, three have been biere de gardes... a very unusual emphasis; basically helping keep alive a style that is dying in northern France. I look forward to more from Diebolt. A votre sante' from the Rockies !
