CAN: 12 fl oz pull-tabwith fantastic colourful label art depicting a supervillain. No best before/canned on/born on date(s) appear(s) on the label. Ran me $16.99 USD plus tax for a sixer at Bubbles Liquor World in Castle Rock, Colorado (at least they're not running the 4x16 fl oz scam).

"Double India Pale Ale." 8.0% ABV. Brewed with "Galaxy and other juicy hops." ... "Oats and lactose are added to create a thick mouthfeel."

Served cold into a nonic pint glass.

APPEARANCE: Head is creamy and soft, lasting a good ~7 minutes - which is pretty good for an 8% ABV beer. Easily fills half my pint glass even when side-poured, but I don't suspect overcarbonation.

Body colour is a dull yellow-orange. Worse off for its turbidity, which saps it of life and vibrance. I don't see any lees. Definitely unfiltered going by the appearance; nontransparent.

Appears well carbonated.

AROMA: Tangerine creamsicle, passionfruit, sort of a yogurty tang, pale malt sweetness, lactose sweetness (which seems like it's overkill), guava, fruit juice (think Odwalla or Naked brand). Tangerine is dominant, but despite its citrus fruit aromatics it doesn't seem very acidic.

Aromatic intensity is average.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Creamy and thick, playing into the milkshake IPA vibe Odd 13 seems to be after, but not helping the beer in terms of emphasizing its hop varietals or accentuating its flavours. Its uncommon weight on the palate is a burden, not a benefit in my view. Smooth, soft, wet, unrefreshing. Coating.

Has that weird lactose sugar sweetness that has never worked for me in styles intended to be hoppy; coupled with the pale malt/2-row sweetness, the lactose sweetness seems to prevent the hop flavours from really landing. Hop pungency is lacklustre as a result and this lacks adequate depth of hop flavour for a beer intended to be an imperial IPA.

Hopwise, I do get tangerine and passionfruit but they're coloured by the creamsicle vibe imparted by the unnecessary lactose sugar.

It's not imbalanced, but the lack of hop intensity or just basic hop flavour is egregious...Sierra Nevada's Pale Ale has more hop presence than this does.

OVERALL: An expensive victim of the milkshake IPA fad, and not a beer I'd recommend to friends. Odd13 brews some terrific hoppy ales; this is not one of them. But it's drinkable for what it is and it does disguise its ABV well.

Disappointing.
