Psychopomps guide not judge the dead to the afterlife. This double dry-hopped DIPA clocks in at 8.1% abv and is layered with chewy oats, wheat, and barley then dusted with a pinch of lactose. Double dry-hop doses of Mosaic, El Dorado, Strata and Kohatu create a heady lush tropical experience.

In 2021, we dusted off this beer from the past and bumped up the abv a pinch while also switching out the hop combo. Dripping with a double dose of Simcoe, Wai-iti, and Azacca hops.

Heavy notes of melon, cara cara oranges, and honeysuckle. This one will end the year on our specialty distro IPA series and may I say we’re ending on a high note. Can not wait to flex on 2021.

"Psychopomp Double IPA" per my 16 fl oz can. Cost was $15.49 USD/4 pack at Breaux Mart in Metairie, Louisiana (plus tax). Canned 12/11/20.

8% ABV. No hop varietals are indicated on the label.

Served cold into a stemless wine glass.

Pours a dull turbid yellow body...lacks life and vibrance. Appears unfiltered to its extreme detriment. Another victim of the haze craze...

Head is white and fluffy, lasting longer (head retention is ~8-10 minutes) than it has much right to given the high ABV...looks well carbonated.

AROMA: Melon, pale malt, wheat, canteloupe, fruit gourd, hints of peach/apricot/stonefruit (from Wai-Iti hops, I imagine), "green" floral hop notes.

Promises a drinkable IIPA for its ABV with a nice but not outstanding hop profile driven by melon-y hop flavours.

Aromatic intensity is moderately high.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Coating, silky smooth, medium to full-bodied, sleek, wet, refreshing, and melony (even in texture). Soft and perfectly carbonated, accentuating the melon-driven hop profile to great effect. Feels juicy on the palate like chomping on fresh sliced canteloupe.

Melon and canteloupe driven hop profiles aren't usually my thing, but this nails what it's going for well. Any subsidiary stonefruit flavours vanish beneath the dominant melon/gourd flavours, unfortunately...some peach/apricot would have been nice to make the hop profile juicier, fresher, and more complex/more diverse.

Malt backbone is pale malt, probably wheat, and definitely oats judging by the beer's smoothness on the palate.

Balanced if a bit simplistic, disguising its high ABV rather well. Finishes a bit acidic on the palate for my taste, with a lingering hop burn in the throat. Its aftertaste is a bit unpleasant as a result.

OVERALL: Looks pretty bad but drinks easy and it has a decent though not dazzling hop profile. I prefer my IIPAs to have a more assertive and complex hop profile, but there's no denying this disguises its ABV well and does a good job at showcasing melony hop flavours....if that's your thing, you'll love it, but I'd pass on another 4-pack myself at its wallet-raping ~$16 pricetag. Not up there with SoPro's finest, but I'm not unhappy I tried it once.

A nice change of pace from the overly tropical turbid IIPAs lining the shelves...

Low B- / WORTHY

01/16/21 can into a dimpled mug:

My rating above captures it - this is a nice but ultimately underwhelming attempt at an IIPA.

I'd rather drink Lagunitas' Sucks, which costs substantially less and tastes better.

Psychopomp was released as a NE IPA in April 2018 at the SoPro Taproom in pint can 4-pks., and then as a limited draft-only release in local markets. It was re-released as Psychopomp Double IPA in December 2020 in limited markets, on draft and in pint can 4-pks., with the ABV bumped from 6.70 to 8.00, and a new hop bill, although in the same family. In fall 2022, the DIPA was re-released at 8.10 ABV, with another adjustment to the hop bill, recalling Mosaic from the OG but continuing to lean on NZ hops. Also re-released in Oct. 2024.

Had the original IPA poured from pint can into nonic pint, enjoyed the 2020 DIPA at the taproom on draft into tulip, imbibed the updated DIPA poured from pint can, bottom stamped (apparently) canned on “10/28/22,” into nonic pint, and enjoyed the 2024 release poured from pint can, bottom stamped (apparently) canned on "09/20/24," into nonic pint.

Similar to but not the same as the 2022 version, the 2024 release pours more classically Heady-hazy gold, with 1- to 2-finger, creamy off-white head, with great retention, leaving thick overlapping rings of lace down the glass. Off the pour, the 2024 leads with more citrus rind aroma, which continues, with some hop spice joining, then mild citrus, tropical fruit including big pineapple and (apparently) passion fruit, sweet stone fruit and even some berry aromas manifest as warms. On tasting, the 2024 release has more sweet citrus to start, before a little less hop resin and citrus rind-like bite, than in 2022, over the same oat-smooth, creamy body, then sweet pineapple, mild citrus, and some berries, without the noticeable malt backbone from 2022, before delivering a citrus-crisp, oat-sticky, slightly-biting, mouth-filling, and just a bit alcohol-warming finish.

By its third iteration in 2022, Psychopomp had evolved from a soft, juicy, citrusy but mostly-orange pushup NEIPA, into a bigger, still plush, full-blown juicy, broadly fruity and above all tropical NE DIPA.
