Spoils of War - Bourbon Barrel-Aged was released on draft and in 22-oz. bombers at the SoPro Taproom on Black Friday 2018, nearly one year after it was put into the Knob Creek barrels. Had at the taproom on draft into tulip, and poured from 22-oz. bomber into faceted mug.
Pours absolutely black with 1/2-finger dark tan head, which quickly dissipates to a ring but leaves some sketchy lace. Lots of beautiful, biting aroma of bourbon as well as aromas of chocolate and vanilla off pour, with the bourbon aroma continuing, joined by aromas of toffee and a little orangey citrus as warms. On tasting, begins with a nice, immediate bourbon bite, and mild but deep, dark chocolate and sweet vanilla, then toffee and a little citrus, like a high-end chocolate candy, before a long, somewhat sticky chocolate but drying and moderately warm bourbon finish.
At 7.10 ABV, the original chocolate espresso milk stout was not too sweet, but after a year in Knob Creek bourbon barrels it is now a beautifully complex yet balanced after dinner treat. Where’s my cigar?
