Sleeper Agent - Chocolate, Vanilla, Cinnamon & Ancho Chiles was released in Dec. 2018 at the SoPro Taproom on limited draft and in 22-oz. bombers. Had in May 2019 poured from 22-oz. bomber into snifter, and again in 2020, 2021, and finally in 2025 each time poured from like bottle usually into snifter.
Pours absolutely black with 1/2-finger quickly dissipating dark-tan head, which quickly dissipates to a persistent ring, leaving some sketchy Belgian lace down the glass. When the beer is young, there are aromas of milk chocolate and roast malts off pour, and sweet vanilla and cinnamon too, for a continuing almost cola-like aroma, with chile pepper aroma joining and growing as warms, but after the beer is cellared the chili pepper aroma hits right off the pour, and continues, with the roast malt aroma joining later and growing as warms. On tasting, begins smooth, sweet vanilla, creamy malt and dark chocolate up front, and when the beer is young you get a little cinnamon, before the chile peppers join and grow, but after the beer is cellared the initial sweet flavors are immediately blasted with hot chile pepper, and the chocolate and chile carry together into a drying, not too sticky, still sweet chocolate and vanilla, and variously chile, alcohol and cinnamon warming finish.
I’m a fan of chile and chocolate stouts. As such, this is an excellent variation on SLEEPEЯ AGENT, and although the chile aroma and flavor are slow-arriving when the beer is young, they come through strong, and earlier the longer the beer is cellared, for a satisfyingly fiery finish.
