Barrel Aged Rye for an Eye. Big rich malt flavors interwoven with a heft dose of spicy rye. Notes of caramel, fig, and spicy pumpernickel bread are balanced by a punch of Simcoe and Centennial hops. Finishes with a smooth malt goodness with a slight grapefruit and pine bite.

After aging in rye whiskey barrels for over eleven months, Rye Barrel Aged Rye for an Eye was released in May 2019 at the SoPro Taproom on limited draft and in 22-oz. bombers, very limited numbers of which later made it into local markets. Had a sneak preview in April 2019 at a SoPro Pop-Up Taproom at LD’s Beer Run, Jackson, Mississippi, on draft into pint mason jar, and had again on 05/04/2020 poured from 22-oz. bomber, labeled 8.80 ABV,* into snifter. *This beer has been reported at 9.0 or even 9.5, and seemingly drinks bigger than that.

Pours deep (almost black, but actually) beautiful mahogany with 1- to 2-finger creamy light-tan head, which dissipates to a persistent ring, and pulls some sketchy lace down the glass. Aromas of dark fruits, dark malts and a little whiskey off pour, then a little citrus aroma, with caramel and sweet vanilla aromas in growing and continuing evidence, along with aromas of a little tobacco, some rye spice and finally sweet stone fruit as warms. On sipping, which is recommended, mouthfilling malt right up front, with immediate pine bite and some nice orangey citrus, then a lot of caramel, a little tobacco and as warms increasing vanilla, with some dark fruits over mostly-hidden rye bread, before a surprisingly clean, alcohol (whiskey) warming, yet still malty and finally citrusy finish.

Barrel aging may have improved this beer more than any other where I have been able to try both the non- and barrel-aged versions.
