Rye for an Eye Old Fashioned, aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels for over eleven months, was a SoPro Taproom-only release in May 2019, on limited draft and in 22-oz. bombers. Had at the Taproom the day released on draft into 4-oz. taster snifter, and again a year later poured from 22-oz. bomber into snifter.

Pours deep brown, almost black, with 1/2-finger very light-tan head which sticks around for a few minutes, leaving some little lace. Aroma begins with a bitter whiskey bite, then vanilla/barrel, caramel and malt, with a hint of cherry. On tasting, alcohol up front, then caramel like regular Rye for an Eye, then some big bite (orange zest?), and whiskey, carrying with the caramel into big cherry (skin) and an alcohol bite finish.

Designed to mimic the classic Old Fashioned cocktail, this version of Rye for an Eye builds off the caramel malt and rye in regular Rye for an Eye, by adding whiskey and vanilla from the barrels and fruit nuances from the orange zest and cherry skins, creating a cocktail-like complexity of aroma and flavor.

Update: Rye for an Eye Old Fashioned was re-released in Oct. 2022, SoPro Taproom-only, on draft and in 16.9-oz. bottles, after aging in hand-selected Bulliet single bourbon barrels for 19 months. Had the 2022 release in May 2023 poured from 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.

The longer aging period of the 2022 release, not surprisingly, reduced the head to minimal, the retention to non-existent and the lacing to practically none, with the 2022 vintage otherwise resembling the 2019 vintage in appearance. In aroma and flavor, however, the 2022 vintage surpasses the 2019 original. There is little vanilla but a lot more fruit in the aroma of the 2022 vintage--big, continuing fresh cherry and orange aromas. On tasting, both vintages have a nice caramel start, but in 2022 leading into bright, fresh orange and cherry, which carry into a malty, moderately hop bitter but not overly alcoholic finish.

The 2022 release is altogether a more fruity and delicious rendition of an Old Fashioned cocktail beer.
