2022 version aged 12 months in 7-year Old Soul Tintype series bourbon barrels. Conditioned on mounds of cocoa nibs, toasted coconut, raw coconut, and pecans.

For the 2023 version, we upped the toasted coconut just a pinch from our normal dose and lowered the raw coconut equal parts, pecans and nibs were added like normal. Aged in cathead old soul bourbon single barrels that we acquired within days of emptying the bourbon.

Cake Walk Barrel-Aged German Chocolate Cake, aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels for a year, was a SoPro Taproom-only release in August 2020 on draft and in gold-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles. Had in Feb. 2021 poured from gold-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.

Pours absolutely black with a thin, fizzing, dark-tan head, which quickly dissipates to a thin ring, soon to nothing, and leaving only a few specks of lace, per usual (for barrel-aged stouts). Nice aromas of Wild Turkey whiskey and chocolate off the pour, which continue into dark fruits, and are joined by a hint of pecans as warms. Begins with carbonation and hop bite over substantial chocolate, carried by the standard Cake Walk grainy cake structure, into delicious Wild Turkey flavors warming up the otherwise lactose smooth and sweet chocolate finish, with a hint of pecans.

The barrel-aging complements rather than overwhelms the German chocolate cake flavors laid down, like a chocolate liqueur truffle, if it were made in Kentucky, making a perfect after-dinner drink.

Update: Cake Walk Barrel-Aged German Chocolate Cake was re-released on May 15, 2021, at the Taproom for SoPro's 8th Ann. Party on draft and in gold-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles, after aging 13 months in Woodford Reserve barrels. Had the 2021 release in May 2023 poured from gold-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.

As expected, there is no evident change in appearance from the 2020 vintage to the 2021 vintage. The Woodford Reserve barrels, unsurprisingly, generate a much moderated whiskey aroma as compared to the Wild Turkey barrels, (perhaps) allowing coconut aroma to manifest in the 2021 beer, while retaining a little pecan aroma, and also give a brighter, even citrusy fruit aroma in the 2021 beer as compared to the darker fruit aromas of the 2020 beer. On tasting, after the same chocolate cake start, the 2021 beer delivers some orchard fruit, and definite coconut, then a milder whiskey flavor as compared to the 2020 beer, before a similar warming, chocolate and pecan finish.

Update: Cake Walk - Barrel Aged German Chocolate Cake was re-released as Cake Stand, etc., on Black Friday 2022 only at the SoPro Taproom on draft and in gray-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles, after aging 12 months in 7-year Old Soul Tintype series bourbon barrels. Had the 2022 release in Nov. 2023 poured from gray-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.

Similar pour to first two releases, and similar aroma to the 2021 release, but in the 2022 release the citrus aroma now leads to a crisp, hoppy, citrusy, and still chocolate finish, without forgetting the bourbon-barrel character and nutty background, requiring a slight increase in my taste and overall ratings from 4.25 to 4.50. Cheers!

Update: Cake Stand, etc. was re-released on Black Friday 2023 only at the SoPro Taproom on draft and in black-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles, after upping the toasted coconut just a pinch and lowering the raw coconut an equal part, and aging in freshly-emptied Cathead Old Soul Bourbon single barrels. Had the Black Friday 2023 release in June 2024 poured from black-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter. As the two differences from the previous release were mere adjustments rather than significant changes, my memory and current palate can not distinguish between the two, except for a bit of pepper in the 2023 release.

Update: Cake Stand, etc. was re-released on Black Friday 2024 only at the Taproom on draft and in dark red-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles, after aging for 12 months in Wild Turkey barrels, like the 2020 OG release. The 2024 vintage is, not surprisingly, very similar to the 2020 release.
