Liminal Spaces was a SoPro Taproom-only limited release on Black Friday Nov. 2021 in white-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles and on draft. Had at the SoPro Taproom on draft into 4-oz. taster tulip, and later poured from white-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.
Pours apparently black but deep, almost black whiskey brown when backlit, with apparent clarity and minimal tan head, that quickly retreats to a ring, which itself drops away, leaving only a few specks of lace. Big aromas of sweet bourbon and dark candy malts off pour, and oak barrel vanilla, dark rye bread and finally raw barley aromas as warms. On tasting, begins sweet whiskey over smooth, mild, unroasted but dark rye bread and sweet toffee malts, with oak barrel vanilla in back, then a hint of dark fruit joins the mild dark bread and candy malts, before a not-too-warming, just a bit sweet, crisp, slightly piney, whiskey finish.
Sweeter, fuller-bodied, and with a less-challenging finish than typical for an English barleywine. Rather an easy-drinker, except for the 10.00 ABV backside surprise.
