This Barrel-Aged Black Walnut Coffee Cream Cake release in the Cake Walk Imperial Stout series was a small-batch, SoPro Taproom-only release for the SoPro 8th Ann. Party on May 15, 2021, on draft and in 16.9-oz., chrome-labelled, white waxed-cap bottles. Had poured from 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.
Pours absolutely black, with 1/2-finger dark-tan head, which quickly dissipates to a thin ring, leaving only a few specks of lace. Aroma of unsweet cocoa off pour, then unroasted grain (cake batter) and roasted walnuts, soon joined by a little whiskey, and finally some sweet vanilla as warms. Begins lactose smooth, delivering a little biting whiskey over mild unsweet chocolate and grainy "cake batter" base, somewhat moderated from the usual Cake Walk base texture, and then (especially as warms) sweet vanilla, which carries into some walnut and mild roast coffee for a mildly sweet dessert finish, with a lingering, highly viscous mouthfeel.
Another excellent cake-mimicking beer, finely balanced and subtle for a huge stout, but finishes like an iced cake.
