Rye for an Eye Cherry Smash was a March 2023 SoPro Taproom-only release on draft and in 16.9-oz. bottles. Had poured from 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.
Pours apparently absolutely black but actually deep whiskey brown, with 1/2-finger dark tan head, which soon dissipates to a ring, and then nothing, leaving no lace. Big aroma of cherries and lesser aroma of bourbon off pour, then an underlying but intermittent aroma of almonds, with the cherry continuing over aromas of barely perceived caramel malt, straight barley malt, rye spice and finally piney hops as warms. On tasting, begins thick cake (bread and caramel) malt body, delivering mild bourbon and sweet maple syrup, and then big continuing sweet cherry, finally balanced by a long, bitter almond, malty and noticeably citrusy and piney finish.
This Cherry Smash version of Rye for an Eye may be SoPro's best beer facsimile of the Old Fashioned cocktail so far, as the (huge) cherry and (lasting) almond are much more in evidence than in either release of the more stridently named Rye for an Eye Old Fashioned.
