Cake Walk Barrel-Aged Chocolate Hazelnut Crunch Truffle Cake was a small-batch, SoPro Taproom-only release on May 15, 2021, for the SoPro 8th Ann. Party, on draft and in 16.9-oz., metallic gold-labeled, metallic-gold waxed-cap bottles, but in June 2021 SoPro gave notice it was soured and refunds would be given. Had in May 2023, poured into a snifter from a pre-release 16.9-oz. bottle I had held, assuming it was soured. It was not.
Pours absolutely black, with 1/2-finger dark-tan head, which quickly dissipates to a persistent ring, leaving a little splotchy lace down the glass. Soured aroma on opening the bottle, or maybe (probably) I imagined it, but and because there were mild malt and chocolate aromas from the glass off the pour, then a nicely nutty aroma, and a little whiskey as warms, and finally that unroasted barley (cake batter) aroma that backs SoPro's Cake Walk series. On tasting, begins thick, malty and chocolate, with moderate carbonation, then a little sweet vanilla, and smooth nuttiness, all over that grainy Cake Walk cake batter body, before a crisp, bit warming, but not terribly whiskey finish.
An excellent dessert stout, which would probably have been more interestingly whiskey barrel-aged, if I had opened earlier. The brewery should give this one another shot.
