Sea Lord Mexican Hot Chocolate was a SoPro Taproom-only release in Dec. 2023, and only on draft. Had poured from 32-oz. crowler, filled "2/17[/24]," into clear plastic wine cup.
Pours apparently completely black, until backlit and then shown to be deep brown (but only at the edges), with 1-finger, foamy, fizzing tan head, and good retention, leaving overlapping rings of Belgian lace. Hot pepper aroma off pour, along with the expected aroma of sweet cocoa, as warms some mild roast malt aromas sneak through and then hints of vanilla and cinnamon aromas join the mild continuing chocolate, along with finally a little of hoppy berry aroma. On tasting, begins lighter than you would expect, with smooth and creamy chocolate and immediate hot pepper, which continue over mild roast malts but without becoming overbearing, before welcoming cinnamon and a little relieving vanilla, all carrying into a spicy, festive finish.
As an oat brown ale, Sea Lord provides a lighter (but still creamy) base than a stout for the hot pepper treatment, making this excellent chocolate pepper beer more quaffable than typical. Still, the hot pepper does reduce the more complex interest of OG Sea Lord.
