Hype Barrel Racks 3.0 was released on Black Friday, Nov. 24, 2023, (only) at the SoPro Taproom on limited draft and in red-waxed 16.9-oz. bottles. Had poured from red-waxed 16.9-oz. bottle into snifter.
Pours absolutely black with thin, dark-tan head, which quickly dissipates to a partial film and thin ring, yet leaves some traces of lace down the glass. Aromas of much whiskey and mild banana off pour, and continuing, with aromas of a little cinnamon and more cake-like barley, joined by sweet maple syrup aroma as warms. On tasting, begins sweet maple and contrasting bourbon bite, with some banana, especially as warms, which carry over a thick, sticky (possibly banana-influenced) body, and chocolate cake-like malt, joined by cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla, into a balanced, mildly sweet, somewhat alcohol-warming, still sticky but drying finish.
Big, sticky, sipper of a dessert stout, it's mostly whiskey and bananas, and though I can't compare the beer to Bananas Foster (having never had that dish), the sweetness is nicely balanced by the fresh Old Soul barreling and high ABV.
