Presentation: 500 milliliter bottle poured into a pint glass. Purchased from Total Wine & More.

Look: bright golden color. Moderate size head that evaporates rather slowly. Good amount of lacing.

Smell: sweet bread, malt, veggies, herbs, hops.

Taste: similar to the smell, sweet bread, malt, veggies, herbs, minerals, and a crisp hops aftertaste taste. It’s a bit more bitter than I expected, but not excessively bitter.

Feel: smooth, creamy, bubbly mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation.

Overall: this is a good Czech Pilsner. The flavor has a good balance of sweetness and bitterness. No offensive flavors or aromas detected. It’s worth trying if you like the style of beer.

Staropilsen "Česká Koruna"
500 ml green glass bottle coded "F17 # L/PS".
$3.99 @ Total Wine & More, Claymont, DE

Notes via stream of consciousness: So this is the Czech crown? The Czech "Corona"? I don't know if that's good or bad. It's poured a clear deep-golden colored body beneath a finger's width of white foam. It's skunked, as expected, but beyond that the aroma is surprisingly bready and toasty with some herbal hops threaded through. The taste bears that out with some light apple-like fruitiness thrown into the mix. It's got a solid bitterness to it which balances the sweetness of the malt nicely, leaving it sweetish upfront but then dry, bitter, and herbal in the lingering finish. In the mouth it's medium bodied and crisp. It seems like a natural carbonation but I could be totally wrong. One thing's for sure though, it could have better head retention and lacing, and that coupled with the skunkiness hurts its score.

Pours a clear golden color with a small head. Aroma is citrus hops and malt. Taste is sweet bitterness with carbonation. Tastes like an American lager or vice versa, strong on hops, but easy drinking.

What a delightful beer! A touch on a sweet side, with a nice elegant hop bite. A beautiful rich gold color. Excellent head retention and lace. Delish!

Koruna is above average for this new style (which is starting to make sense to me because the Czech tradition is a higher tradition than the rest of Europe except for the B&Bs (Belgians and Bavarians.)

Koruna Looks very good, nice bronze, foam and lace. Smells are only slightly above average (I wish the Czechs would use a little more aromatic hops instead of mostly bitter.) Tastes are balanced and the hops linger nicely in the finish. Medium-mouthed. Soft.

As for Overall Hugs for Staropilsen, not so much. In fact, their website is not informative about what motivates them or if their only impact is to brew beer like previous generations did.

Pours a clear golden color. Lightly effervescent. Two finger white sudsy head forms upon pouring. Head completely dissipates with no residual head. Aroma has notes of sweet bread, sweet malt and some light grassy hops. This one, thankfully, does not have that same skunked aroma the previous one did.

Taste follows the nose with notes of sweet malts, sweet bread, some white wonder bread, giving way to some herbal grassy hops on the back end. The flavor profile reminds me of the cheap euro pale lagers but with a bot more hop bite to it. Again, it's not bad or offensive, it's just not one I want a second one of. Feel is light, crisp, and drinkable. Moderately carbonated.

Overall, its fine.

Look is right but smell and taste are lacking. Lesser grass and pepper flavors in this lager. Light and crisp enough and definitely drinkable. However, this one is not as enjoyable as other Czech imports.

Pours a pale gold, saturated color with bright clarity and a lasting head of foam.

Aroma is a bit skunky at first but it fades. Cereal grains, vaguely grassy noble hops.

Taste is mildly toasty, puffed rice cereal, mild grassy bitterness. Fairly clean and relatively fresh.

Light bodied with a softer feel and mellow carbonation. Overall it's not bad, simple and utilitarian.
