Reviewed from notes taken at the brewpub sometime in 2014:
On-draught into a bierkrug @ ABGB. 5.80% ABV. "India Session ale."
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Two fingers in height. Off-white colour. Decent creaminess and thickness. Okay froth. Leaves webby inconsistent lacing as it recedes. Pretty good (~5-6 minute) retention.
BODY: Clear copper colour of average vibrance. Clean, lacking any visible yeast particulate/hop sediment. Translucent and transparent.
Appears well-carbonated. Far from unique or special in appearance for the style. Looks like a typical pale ale.
AROMA: Bursts with hops. Pine, floral character, resins, oils herbal notes, and some faint grassiness. Pale malts and leavening barley help kep the hop bitterness disguised. True to style, there are no overt boozy or yeasty aromatics.
A pleasant and inviting aroma of mild aromatic intensity. Suggests a nicely built session IPA.
TASTE: Zestier than anticipated, with some tangerine and melon fruit notes alongside ample herbaceous, floral, resinous, and faint piney character. Pale malt sweetness checks the bitterness from the zealous hop build. Barley gives it a light body coupled with the pale malt.
Average depth, duration, and intensity of flavour. Good balance. It's complex for a pale ale/session IPA, with lovely fruity flavours that make it quite likable. Sure, it could be still more intricate and nuanced. But so could many beers.
MOUTHFEEL: Refreshing, lightly juicy, smooth, wet, medium-bodied, and of apt thickness. It's overcarbonated, though, and has too heavy a presence on the palate for the flavour profile and style. Could certainly present more fresh. Overall, this texture fails to elevate the beer as a whole but does complement the taste generally well.
OVERALL: It's very drinkable i spite of its pesky overcarbonation, and will satisfy the session IPA fan. Not world class by any stretch, but enjoyable and worth trying. I'd probably get it again, though I do wish the price was better.
