Sour ale brewed with 300lbs of apples and lactobacillus bacteria. Not to be confused with plain "Fiona" from the same brewery.

32oz crowler purchased at ABGB for $18 USD. 2018 vintage.

APPEARANCE: Fizzy off-white head. Thin. Weak. Drops from ~8cm in height to nothing within 1 minute, leaving no lacing on the sides of the glass. Retention is subpar.

Body colour is a cloudy yellow of average vibrance. Lacks any visible yeast or lees, but I wouldn't say it appears filtered given its cloudiness.

Generally appealing for an apple sour ale, but it fails to dazzle.

AROMA: Lactobacillus acidity and twang. I don't detect apple. 2-row. Pilsner malt. Maybe wheat?

Aromatic intensity is moderately high. Sourness seems evident, but it's very clean, lacking microfloral notes or any aromatic evidence of true spontaneous fermentation. I don't find brettanomyces, pediococcus, or acetobacter.

The absence of apple is a bit unexpected. Seems like a clean drinking lacto-bomb with a straightforward simplistic flavour profile.

TASTE & TEXTURE: Lactobacillus is evident, lending this a clean assertive sourness (about a 7/10 in terms of intensity). 2-row bends to the whims of the bacteria; this lacks any bold malty notes. I don't find the apple either...maybe a kiss of green apple when I rally look for it but it's not crisp granny smith apple or off-flaovur green apple. Not cidery either.

Vinegar-like acidity and a bit of tartness complement the sourness at the heart of this straightforward ale. There's no microflora, oak, pediococcus, lactobacillus, or chestnut wood to elevate this beyond run-of-the-mill sour territory.

Smooth, wet, medium-bodied, somewhat refreshing, acidic, crisp, and well-carbonated. Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough, or scratchy.

OVERALL: Competent fare from a brewery that clearly just wants a piece of the sour ale market. Clean drinking and fairly well-executed, but it's a very safe and uninspired attempt at the style. I wouldn't buy it again especially over better priced Belgian imports, but I'll enjoy working my way through the crowler andII'd love to see ABGB work towards more daring and inspired sour ales.
