After trying and enjoying Top Shelf's Marathon (seemingly much more than anyone else on here), I decided to bring the brand into our store. Silk City has been doing well so far, but a customer returned a 6pk tonight saying that he thought there was something wrong with it. I know he's primarily an IPA drinker, but Top Shelf also has the reputation of putting out infected beer in the past. Either way I'm happy to test things out, so I brought the remaining 5 cans home to see for myself.
Look: WOOOSH!!! Silk City? More like foam city. This is almost on the level of Rayon Vert and Orval. After spending a good 5 minutes pouring this into my tulip (and cleaning up the mess from the foamy can explosion), I'm treated to a decent looking, cloudy pale orange beer with a sudsy white head on top. Looking alright so far, but should it really be this explosive? A solid film persisted throughout the glass.
Smell: Classic Belgian yeast: clove and spiciness with maybe a hint of funk? Brettanomyces would probably explain the beersplosion, but it doesn't really seem funky enough to signal brett. Besides, I doubt these guys would want to mess with brett given their history of bottling/canning issues, but I wouldn't rule infection out. Refermentation? The nose here is mostly clove and pepper with a little banana and earthy spice; relatively aromatic, but nothing exemplary.
Taste: Mmmmm! Clove, banana, lemon, earthy spice, and a deliciously dry finish. This definitely tastes more like a Belgian Strong Pale Ale, but it's all good. It could definitely be more complex and less foamy, but I'm a sucker for Belgian yeast flavors, so it's good by me.
Feel: Too heavy to be a saison. It's more like a super foamy Belgian Strong Pale ale. Waaaaay too foamy. Each sip fills your mouth up with foam.
Overall: A decent effort from Top Shelf, despite its shortcomings. I think people are passing on the brand because their labels look like shit and their initial effort was plagued with problems, but this right here is a decent beer. A bit rough around the edges, but it's worth a shot.
