Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a very dark mahogany brown appearing almost opaque in the glass with a half finger tan head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet dark malt, gingerbread and a bit of dark dried fruit. Flavor is rich sweet dark and biscuit malt, nuts, pumpkin (I was told that it was actually made with another squash, but the flavor is indistinguishable to me), ginger and holiday spices. A bit of butteriness. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A nice take on a pumpkin style ale and faithful to its gingerbread intent without being cloying. The malt is substantial and flavorful enough to carry the well done spicing. This is a style that often drifts into artificial flavors or reliance on spices, but this one has some real squash character and a good malt body to carry it through. The ginger is deftly done. A very nice holiday ale.
