A Cascadian dark or black IPA. Adding the majority of the dark grains at the end of the mash gives black color without all the roast flavors allowing the hop flavor to come through. 8 hop additions including mash and first wort give this dark brew a big hop aroma and flavor.

On-tap @ Bittercreek Boise ID.

A: Dark brown body with red translucent edges. Nitro-like off-tan head sticks around and leaves solid lacing.

S: Big ripe citrus, orange and grapefruit, with a nice bready roasted malt backbone bordering on chocolate. Sharp hints of pine and resin in the aromas as well.

T: Taste follows the nose with a touch more balance....roasted malts and dark chocolate battle orange peel, pine, and grapefruit pith...nice almost herbal resiny undertone. Crisp flavors with hints of espresso as well; good drying bitterness on the finish.

MF: Medium, dry mouthfeel with spot-on carbonation.

O: I think this is a really solid Black IPA, very good stuff. Not sure how much local demand there is for another Black IPA but this is more than tasty enough to go year round IMO.

I had a couple glasses of this at the Barley Bros traveling beer show in Boise. I actually poured this beer for about 3 hours on Saturday afternoon.

Appearance: Black as can be with low lying brown head. Looked great.
Smell: Yeah there is a decent amount of hops in there. I reconize the hops on the smell from the northwest.
Taste: The taste is a smooth IPA. There is not burnt taste or smoke with it just a classic IPA that rolls through smooth with no over powering aftertaste.
Mouthfeel- Not to heavy, perhaps a little on the dry side but nothing to be concerned with. No heavy bite
Overall- Best Black IPA I have ever had. I would. I have never liked them that much and drank this beer a decent amount that night...

Growler picked up last night at the brewpub... shared tonight with inflatablechair ... poured into my small tulip... foamy lite tan head... nice lacing... the brew isn't black for sure, instead a pretty deep walnut.. very nice looking brew.

Nose begins with a good punch of citrus and quickly moves into a bit of roasty malt (nice for a 'stained' brew :-) Aroma is about perfect for an emerging style... very fresh of course.

Hoppy bitterness is pretty high.. combined with a lite dark malt presence .. it is eye opening for sure.... a pithy citrus that gets lost in the bitter elements a bit .. I do like that this brew is damn dry and allows the hops and dark malts to fight it out.. approachable and drinkable for me.

The growler will die quickly tomorrow night.
