This beer may be to Saisons what the Black IPA is to, well...
Most saisons I have hade are lighter in color, for sure. This beer pours like a porter, dark brown to the point of appearing black. There is a nice head on the beer that slowly dissolves into the beer, but re-emerges with a swirl, and collects at the edges.
The smell seems representative of the saison style, a bit funky and earthy. The funky is a bit of milk with lemon (not quite the soured milk of a lacto-based sour), with a hint of tart raspberry. There is a roasted scent as well, that grows with warmth, not surprising given the color.
The taste doesn't live up to the smell in complexity, to me, but is more in line with the proclaimed saison style. Earthy, hay, farmhouse overall feel; a bit nutty in the end, which is also where the raspberry peeks out from underneath. The carbonation is nice, the overall feel is maybe a little heavier than other saisons, but not near the "implied" thickness of a darker beer. Overall the taste ends up more towards a saison than I expected from the look and knowledge of added raspberry.
Interesting, decent beer. I have mixed feelings, especially since I am not a huge fan if saisons. If you're a fan of the style, give it a try and see what you think.

We love reviews (150 characters or more)! Check out: How to Review a Beer. You don't need to get fancy. Drop some thoughts on the beer's attributes (look, smell, taste, feel) plus your overall impression. Something that backs up your rating and helps others. Thanks!
