500 mL bottle picked up at the brewery; no bottling date, but this was released within the past week, so I am going to assume it's quite fresh. I believe it's named after the Apollo Cinema in Kitchener, which is where this brew's first public release occurred. Served well-chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-apricot colour, capped off with nearly an inch of spongy, soapy white head. It recedes steadily and uniformly, casting off an attractive ring of lace as it is slowly reduced to a frothy, bubbly cap and collar. Not particularly aromatic, but I am getting a few whiffs of cantaloupe, grapefruit pith, orange and pineapple, as well as a light, grainy malt sweetness.
A full-flavoured, well-hopped session ale. The malts are clean, grainy, and a bit wheaty, with accompanying hints of apricot and melon. Flavours of orange, grapefruit and pineapple come through mid-sip, transitioning into a pithy, more resiny/piney sort of bitterness that lingers through the finish and into the long, dry aftertaste. Light-bodied, with relatively low carbonation levels that weakly agitate the tongue. Overall, it feels a bit thin and watery, but it's still a tasty, highly drinkable pale ale.
Final Grade: 3.59, a worthy B grade. Light and flavourful, Block Three's Apollo Pale Ale is an ideal summer selection for the patio - though I suppose it'd do quite well in an air-conditioned cinema, as well. Everyone seems to be hopping on the session IPA bandwagon these days - and while this isn't explicitly advertised as such, it fits the mould well enough that I'd probably just lump it in with beers like Detour, Cruiser, et al. Since it's not available locally, I probably won't return to it any time soon - but if you're a hophead in the market for something sessionable, this is worth a serious look.
