500 mL bottle procured at the brewery about a month ago; no packaging date. Served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-amber colour, topped off with one inch of frothy, off-white head that proceeds to wilt away slowly over the next five minutes or so. A dense, creamy cap survives at the surface, blending seamlessly into a wide, foamy collar. The nose is rife with notes of ripe orchard fruit - apricot, red apple and pear, with hints of lemon peel, banana and bubblegum. Candi sugar and clove spice also come through, with some bready malts and caramel sweetness. It's an enticing aroma, but it does come off a bit subdued.
This is a very nice Belgian pale ale; one that drinks much more lightly than the 6.3% abv would imply. The front end leans toward the sweet side, with bready malts and some caramelized sugar sweetness leading into fruity flavours of apricot, banana, orange peel and red appleskin. Quite yeasty, too; hints of clove and white pepper crop up toward the finish, alongside some bubblegum flavour and grassy hops that dry out the palate, but only about halfway. Residual sugary sweetness in the aftertaste. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation levels that gently agitate the palate. The overall mouthfeel is rather smooth and highly enjoyable, and certainly appropriate for the style.
Final Grade: 3.98, an impressive B+. Block Three's Single Track Mind is an impressive golden ale that I would say is well worth a try. As the name suggests, the flavour profile is a bit one-dimensional - definitely on the sweet side, with the malt and yeast character pretty much dominating this one from start to finish. But it's just so damn tasty. This is one of a very small handful of Ontario-made, Belgian-style pale ales that I would say matches up favourably with some of the more common imports (think Leffe/Affligem Blonde). We've still got a ways to go if we want to catch up with Quebec when it comes to Belgian-style beer brewing - but quality beers like this will hopefully continue to close the gap.
