At my lady Pamela's house; canned, from Small Batch Dispatch's 2024 Advent Calendar. My fourth from the significant St. Jacobs brewery, and second of 2025.

473 mL can, Day 8 of Nita Beer's 2024 Advent Calendar; dated Oct 28 2024 and served slightly chilled. Block Three is a brewery I've been to several times, back when I used to swing through the Guelph/KWC area a couple of times a year. They brew some fine beers, but unfortunately I fell out of the habit of going on brewery road trips - I think 2017 was my most recent visit.
Pours a dark brown-black cola colour; holding it to the light reveals both its clarity and its brilliant ruby-red highlights. More than two fingers of creamy, buff-coloured head is situated atop - excellent retention, caking the glass with a generous coating of lace as it slowly recedes down to a thick collar and lumpy cap. Easily one of the most visually-appealing lagers I've reviewed this year. Roasted grains and coffee on the nose, with hints of cocoa, toasted bread, earthy hops and very subtle caramel.
A solid schwarzbier, leaning toward the drier side of the spectrum. Flavours of coffee, cocoa powder and roasted grains are discernible, with hints of toasted bread and caramelized sugars. Finishes with coffee grounds, bitter chocolate and earthy, herbal hops preceding a relatively dry aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation levels that add some spritz to this lager's generally silky-smooth, somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Great drinkability, with legitimate session beer potential.
Final Grade: 3.92, a B+. I thought Lobsinger Lager sounded familiar! It's obviously a German/Mennonite surname, but it's also the name of the road that I'd take on the way to St. Jacobs, coming from the west. As for the beer itself, I think this is an above-average dark lager - a little sweet on the forefront, but with a dry finish that compels me to keep on sippin'. I would buy this again given the opportunity, and I'd encourage other German lager-loving BAs to give it a try.
