Merry Christmas everybody. So, oddly enough I forgot that I'm out of coffee filters and there isn't any way I'm unwrapping presents in a half asleep stupor. I tried having a cup of tea I, but it's just isn't doing to trick. So, time to turn to coffee beer, what's this? A coffee beer that isn't a stout or porter, sign me up....wait, what's that? It's an IPA? Aww humbug....oh well I'm too tired, lets get to it.
Appearance: Laces like crazy, as it produced a solid two fingers of head. Sadly the retention just wasn't there. The body is a hazy orange cloud reminiscent of those "tropical blend" orange juices. The hazy is so thick, it's very hard to glean the exceptionally thin but ample carbonation.
Smell: Ample orange and grapefruit notes that is giving me some warning bells that this will be a hop punch. Oddly enough, as it warms up it seems to lose quite a bit of potency. Not even the slightest hint of coffee though which has me concerned.
Taste: Well, not surprising citrus hops permeate the beer, as it's the only thing I taste at the start, we do get a slight malt touch in the middle, but it's faint but the end is when a rich dry espresso makes a pass, looking like it might try to stand up to the hops, but then it quickly thinks twice about it and departs. That said, I'll be generous here, tis the season right? After all, it's an IPA, it's supposed to be hoppy.
Mouthfeel: This is certainly the weakest point here, as the hops cling without remorse. Not as bad as some IPAs mind you, but the more you drink it, the more I get a feeling that I've just chewed on an orange peel. The carbonation does a good job of bringing out that coffee note, and it's fairly even keel. The transitions though are pretty much non-exsistant, going from bitter citrus, to bitter citrus, to coffee drowned out by bitter citrus.
Drinkability: Medium bodied, but it's not settling down in my stomach very nicely. It's not that it's gassy, it's that my stomach wants to reject it. It's kind of like when you have an upset stomach, something strong like coffee tends to not agree with you. It's like that, only that there wasn't an issues when I started the beer. Not overly refreshing, but I will say that I am starting to feel more alert.
Final Thoughts: Realistically, if it wasn't for the fact this beer has coffee in it, this would be a write off for me. The coffee is what tries and fails to save this beer. That said, if you are an IPA drinker, I can see you liking this beer, and I tried to be generous to this one given the style. That said, I wouldn't buy this again.
