There's nothing wrong with a little dessert! Our latest small-batch sour is called Cherry Pie - take one sip and you'll see exactly why. We used a blend of sweet and sour cherries with a touch of almond and vanilla for a tart, refreshing sour that's balanced by a hint of sweetness. It really is like biting into a slice of cherry pie with a graham cracker crust!

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Oct 15 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a muddy, reddish-purple colour, kicking up half a finger of smooth, pale pink-tinged foam that fizzles within thirty seconds. Lots of clumpy sediment is strewn throughout its body, which is capped by a thin collar and little else - between the sediment and the colour, it kind of resembles a caesar with the works. That being said, it sure doesn't smell like one - big cherry notes, with sugary sweetness and almonds also coming through quite clearly. Hints of vanilla, pie crust, cherry pit, lemon and lacto sourness.

Weird, but tasty - I'm getting sweet cherry filling and buttery pie crust flavours come through at first, with vanilla and almonds next in line. The tartness builds up somewhat towards the finish, with notes of lemon, dessert wine and confectionery tying up the back end; lingering cherry fruit flavour, with suggestions of lactic acidity and amaretto reverberating into the aftertaste. No sign of that 7.5% at all. Medium in body, with low-ish carbonation that gently tickles the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, relatively soft & plush mouthfeel. Surprisingly drinkable, although I found myself tiring of the almond/vanilla combo after a while.

Final Grade: 4.16, an A-. Collective Arts' Cherry Pie is no ordinary kettle sour, which I suppose is why they included "Imperial Fruited Pastry Sour" as the subheading. I actually found this to be more 'sweet' than 'sour': sure, there are tart cherry and sour lactic flavours, but the pastry/pie crust flavours are somewhat more dominant, helped along especially by the vanilla. The almond flavour is neat at first, but a tad overplayed IMO... and also, I don't really associate that flavour with cherry pie. It's not perfect, but it is an undeniably novel addition to Ontario beer shelves, and a treat for any fan of sweet cherry beers. I'll totally be picking this up again the next time I see it.

7 month old can, so going with what I have. It's got floaties and otherwise kinda clear dark purple, not sure how it might have looked fresh. Aroma is as described by the can with almond and vanilla. Flavor is dominant cherry and slight vanilla, no graham that I can detect. Overall tasty even after sitting a long time. Not bad.

Overbearing maple/ almond paste flavor pushes through the cherry and quickly ruins it. Small hit of cherry in the middle then again long lingering maple finish. Wouldn't recommend

This one is pretty interesting on multiple levels. Intense ruby color is quite striking. Moderate head, minimal lace. Great nose. Cherries, chocolate, coconut. Sweet, but not too sweet. Buttery somehow, like pastry or coconut cream. Under tones of malt. A treat on the nose. Tart cherries to taste, cut with chocolate, coffee. Mouthfeel is tart complemented by soft creaminess with a puckering finish. Not boozy in any way. This one is tasty, interesting and full on fun to drink.

L: Opaque hazy blood red with particulate and nearly no head or lacing
S: Pretty subtle fruity red wine smell and a bit sweet
T: Profound and tart fruity dark cherry and red wine flavour with an interesting rich stout dark chocolate/coffee like malt. Didn't really remind me of cherry pie though. It's not very sweet and also not very bitter.
F: Medium bodied and nice carbonation, somewhat crisp and lingering nice mouth feel
O: Not amazing but interesting, unusual, enjoyable and very drinkable. For a holiday novelty this is a good pick.

Listed as Cherry Pie Sour a imperial fruited pastry sour. LCBO purchase for about $5 CDN. Served cold into a chalice with a canning date of October 7, 2021. 7.5% ABV per can.

Appearance - Pours a hazy magenta colored beer with a finger plus of light pink head. Rather good staying power and some spotty lacing clings to the edges of the glass.

Smell - Rich sweet pastry crust, sweet cherry pie filling, something sweet like marshmallow or whipped cream as well. Does hit the pie aroma pretty good. The buttery quality also reminds me of the Jellybelly Buttered Popcorn jellybeans, it's almost a perfect match.

Taste - Somewhat tart in the form of cherries, there is some considerable sweetness and richness which does have a pie like flavor, not buttery but the perception of rich and full fat pie crust. Marshmallow is another flavor I get here. Gimmicky sure, but well executed. Booze is completely hidden. The pie crust flavor noticeably falls off in the second half of each sip

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, leaning towards full with modest carbonation. Finish crisp with cherries and tartness.

Overall - Cherry pie is a very tasty one-off beer that is a bit gimmicky but really quite well done. I can't see myself going for multiple in a session to to the unique combo of flavors and high but imperceptible booze quotient. Worth a try for sure.
