i have to admit its been awhile since i had a beer from these guys. they must have gotten better, as this is a real nice quad, especially being american made, way ahead of expectations, although i do recall them always doing the belgian styles better than others. this has a nice clarity to it through the chestnut amber color and underneath a foamy tan head with fine retention. nutty on the aroma, with some molasses sweetness to it, dried fig or date or raisin, and a rich belgian yeast strain the suggests ripe banana and baking spices. the flavor is some of the same, its pretty clean behind a bit of a donut glazed sweetness, dried fruit earthiness, and notes of port wine and brown sugar. its not as complex as the best takes on the style, but its also not out of control on sweetness or yeast esters and seems made with a good technical hand. a little light in body for me, and for the flavors present here, but i like it not being too heavy at the same time. i havent seen very many tap handles for lost highway around, i wonder how their business is doing? this was well ahead of where i expected it to be, and a tasty and drinkable quad overall. comfortable abv too. nicely done.

I liked this quad quite a bit, though I was surprised that I didn't really feel the 9% ABV that much. But that's probably a good thing, as it was the first of several that I put together in my beer flight. I figured you should start off a visit to a Belgian-style brewery with a good quad, and this didn't disappoint. Tasted just like it should, with the fruity esters and the corresponding smell. Nicely made.
