a solid american ipa spiked rather aggressively here with some pale rye malt. the rye in this beer is very high in proportion, and its about as much of the rye flavor as i have found in a beer this color. creamy looking and hazy thick, not super carbonated based on appearance, but sturdy and dense and still rather attractive to look at. it smells spicy, the texture and intensity of the rye is there all the way through the aroma. pepper and cardboard and green tea all come to mind from the rye, and in the taste, i get the outside of it rye malt, the hull itself, dry and straw-like, with a lot of gritty texture to it, probably accounting for the haze in here. the hops seem a little short of the ipa level to me, but i like their flavor, which is grassy and bitter, rather strong too it seems. i like the flavors here a lot, and i like the heavy use of rye, but i will also add that i think this is in need of some refinement to get to the next level. its too murky and messy, and there isnt enough carbonation to keep it moving. it also doesnt warm up real well. definitely an interesting brew thats challenging the status quo on rye, but its a little sloppy and raw yet.
